A great circuit tip-toeing between West and South Yorkshire
With a surprise or two

hello and welcome to Clipping In it’s Monday the 2nd of June and today’s ride is going to be a be all kinds of variety heading into that wonderful border country between West Yorkshire and South Yorkshire to Lancet and beyond [Music] [Music] heat heat [Music] on to quieter lanes now after that little bit of main road from Britain roundabout this is a long tough hall up to High Hiland so far this route is similar kind of a roadgoing version of some of the trail and gravel rides that I’ve done on the channel welcome to Barnsley Metropolitan Burough but the hill is showing no mercy still it keeps going up now here on the left is where the bridal way comes in from Britain Hall nice sandy colored grally bridal way how picturesque and this view coming in now look at this i’ve just uh just got to stop here i’ve been stung by a wasp just above my eye well uh that was a bit of bad luck it got on top sort of halfway between my glasses and stung me on my eyebrow i felt two uh halfway up that steep hill that I’ve been talking about and um I couldn’t really stop so I thought well if I don’t have a heart attack oh dear me but no it’s just sore now hopefully if it doesn’t swell and close my eye I’ll be fine so the ride will continue while I’ve stopped let’s indulge in a little panorama we’ve got Metropolitan Barnsley there but once you start to pan in this direction it is magnificent we’re looking over towards Cannon Hall corthornne wow silkston will be roughly in that direction up and over that roughly marks the barrier over towards South Yorkshire and Sheffield over there and the Penines in that direction on that skyline yeah well no thanks to Mr wasp we’ve got some good stuff to come silkstone Village and then once we get through here it’s a crisscross on the main road and then up the long drag to Silken Common and there’s a road sign pointing it all out i’m just taking it nice and steady with all that venom coursing through my veins coming into Lancet but it’s a sharp left now up this hill what a semi sharp this takes us over the transpan trail which is in the railway bed well do I trust the signs i think so the main aim here is just keep gaining height until you get to the top of a rounded rounded ridge there’s two or three ways of doing it the way I was going to show you might be closed but I’m sure we’ll figure it out eventually after some panoramic treats we should be able to swoop down to a point halfway between Lancet and the old Fouchin we’re roughly running parallel with the main fast stocksbridgeidge road which will be to the left once we’ve cleared these trees we get a nice view of the Peak District and Penines headwind at the moment west with a little bit of north mixed in you can see it getting a bit windy here um you can see the Peak District opening out and you might catch a glimpse almost directly ahead near that wagon almost mast [Music] [Applause] you can also see on the skyline all the traffic on the Woodhead Pass directly ahead oh let’s have a look here yeah go on yeah all right i’m dropping now almost back on myself to Milhouse Green which is just outside Penniston and then a cheeky little climb from Milhouse Green up to the infamous windmills we’ll get a view of those in due course left turn get ready for some graft it’s It’s going to be a headwind as well today clink oh this might be new tarmac maybe not i got my hopes up still into the headwind now a surreal sight half turbines it’s a right turn here another little steep kick then we get a proper break car behind if you’d continued on that road you come to a cafe named appropriately Windmills Cafe i have not been but it’s popular when was the last time I went to a cycling cafe i’m going to say 2007 and there we have it taller than the Eiffel Tower i think it’s two weeks since I last rode past here goodness has there been any major changes while I was away steady climb now from Murfield Bottom past the big Murfield church up to Robert Town the weather’s held up which is superb i was fearing some repeats of yesterday’s monster monsoon showers but uh no it’s held off been windy one or two gusts around flanch area kept me on my toes but still ridable as long as you know where your gear lever is the garden rain gauge says around 70 mil over the past three or four days about 3 ines which is well it’s a start isn’t it after a very dry May but let’s let’s hope that we can get uh synchronized with the rain and there’s plenty of nice dry cycling Yeah just am I asking for too much signing off time and that’s been a pretty decent ride actually with some uh new ground for the channel my my right eye oh dear me it’s rather sore i shall uh have to try to get some antiseptic on that I think hope for the best but putting that aside that’s all for this edition of Clipping In see you very soon for another one back out on the Yorkshire roads bye-bye

Great! my old stompin' ground looking as beautiful as ever! I was up over the old Woodhead road on Wharncliffe chase on Saturday, which is not far away. I noted the dates of the Wortley beer festival whilst passing!
Bad news to get TWO wasp stings! Looks a lovely ride though and on a glorious day for it.
I've been stung on my thigh while on the bike. Not nice. Another great ride Gordon.
I hope the stinging has subsided by this evening? Good endurance test for your eye, Gordon.
Great ride, Gordon. Get well soon. The Sting, sounds like a good title for a film. Sorryπ
It never fails to amaze me with insects how they've got the whole world to explore but yet still manage to find a way behind a pair of glasses or inside a helmet π. Thankfully ive never been stung (i'd have probably fallen off going up that hill if it was me π). Hope the swelling and soreness goes away soon.
Great video hope your OK after the wasp sting I got stung on my hand a few years ago while cycling and my arm swelled up not nice
First when we havenβt had high winds around my area so I made use of it and did a few extra miles πi usually get stung around the mouth at least once a year. I just hope one never goes in my mouth. I really hate wasps
The cycling hymenopterist and historian ,is there no limits to your knowledge πnice day for it
Great vid. Gordon. Are you due for a cafe stop vid soon ?
Lovely ride, can envy you route choices. Here is flat, forest and the occasional brutish short wall.
Yes, a fantastic video, Gordon them hills looked daunting. I was cycling towards Boat Inn last year . A wasp went down my top, and iπt had a stinging fest not nice.. little bas###.
A grand trip to the South of the County Gordonβ¦We did the climb out of Millhouse Green up to The Windmills a few weeks ago, itβs a good grind up isnβt it π ..
May borrow that route if youβd allow, havenβt been down to Longsett for a little while ππ»β¦ Hope thereβs been no reaction to the π sting.
β€lovely ride out .live all the info you pass on to us all .
Excellent as always
willow the wisp heard about your chaneel I reckon and wanted to tag along Gordon! enjoyed the scenery again and the views along the way π
Currently sporting the remains of a sting that got in my helmet the other day. Had a fair few now. But the worst by far was a bite from an adder! Yes whilst out on a bike ride. I stopped for a comfort break and must have literally pissed it off! Gave me a kiss on my calf , just lucky it couldn't jump any higher lol. Ended up in A&E to get checked but all was good!
