Hey guys, I had an unfortunate accident, and I found out that I broke my collarbone. It's been two weeks since the accident, and I'm curious to hear about your recovery experiences. My surgeon said that I was okay and didn’t need surgery, but it was ultimately up to me, so I decided against it. Now I'm wondering if I should have gone ahead with the surgery. I really don't want to wait another four weeks only to find out that I still need it. I guess time will tell.

  1. Welcome to the club! 7 time veteran here. Surgery the first time. None the other 6.

For me it’s usually 6-8 weeks of sling time (depending on severity) then slowly getting motion back into it and after 12 weeks I’m slowly riding again.

Last break was just after new years (first one in 7 years) and I was back to riding by mid March. Still sore here and there but I likely rushed it this time so take your time!

The waiting to see if you need surgery anyways sucks but saves a bunch of coin so I always do that. First time I got surgery right away as I had good health insurance (well my dad did I was 18) so it wasn’t too pricey for me. I couldn’t sleep well with the plate so it was removed a year after.

Nah, it should heal up fine, if the doc knows what he’s talking about. It’s an annoying bone to break, for sure. You’ll be able to use your arm after two months (or one month? It’s been so long I don’t remember haha!). Almost sure I was back at work after four weeks off (construction).

That X-ray looks like the bone is displaced (if it’s yours), in which case it won’t heal. Some docs think it’s fine to leave it be. The fix is surgery with a plate.
I was in the same situation and tried to go a month like this and it was terrible. You can feel the bone moving around, can’t carry a back pack, have aches etc… the surgery was short term pain for long term gain.

  4. I might get a second opinion. Mine broke into three pieces. I have a physical job (photographer) and I was looking at being out of work 6-8 weeks with no surgery and two weeks with surgery. I did the surgery and do not regret it all all. It was really easy, less pain than the initial break by miles. And within days I was functional around the house and back to work in two weeks. In my case, because of where the plate had to be (right on top of my shoulder) they recommended a second surgery to remove it after it healed so things like camera straps or backpack straps over the shoulder would be more comfortable, and they said as I age and lose muscle the plate would become very obvious. That second surgery was about a year later and incredibly easy.

Getting back on the bike was harder mentally. Having that fear of getting hurt and being out of working (I’m a day rate contractor) was really hard to get over but in the end staying healthy won out over fear of reinjury.

  5. Had my operation yesterday. One week of stable sling, and then it became displaced for a dreadful week – before I got my plate. Hope I’m ready for Majorca in mid July and Bourg d’Oisans in September. Happy recovery to us both!

  6. I used a peptide. BPC 157 to aid my healing process. Doctor was surprised about how fast I recovered 😂
