Hey bikers,

I’m an 18 year old student taking an Intro to Engineering course, and our goal this year is to take an engineering problem and over the course of the class to design a solution. The problem I’ve chosen to address is how when you lay your bike on the side of the trail to scout it out or take a rest, the bike can be damaged. But kickstands, as we all know, are not the solution. So the solution I am proposing is a crank that extends into a sort of stand, using the pedal as a base of support. But first I need to gather some demographics and gauge interest in such a design.   1. If it could deploy while riding it is as equally bad as kickstands. Also, not a real problem.

  2. One of the fundamentals of Engineering is the KISS principle, and a telescoping crank is not it. People can place their bike on the ground, lean it against a tree, or even find a fallen log/appropriately sized rock to prop their pedal against it without damage just fine for years…

  3. You are a solutions looking for a problem. In all my years of riding never once did I need a kickstand. Nor would I buy one. And good luck selling it to weight whiners that measure everything in grams. You can always lean a bike again a tree, brush, sign, or million other things out there. And laying it one the non drive side so the handlebar and pedal only touch the ground is just fine.
