I did this route on an MTB with a broken suspension. I’ve been cycling for a long time, usually just riding around with friends or going to parks and stuff, but this was the first time I tried something like this. I felt pretty good during the first 10K, but then my upper legs started to hurt a lot. I could’ve gone further, but it noticeably slowed me down. Plus, it was really windy, so I couldn’t enjoy it as much as I wanted to.

Would my time and distance improve if I had a road bike? Also, I’m 17 years old — what kind of workouts or training routines should I do to increase the distance and improve my performance on routes like this?

That’s great, congratulations! Did you ride on a paved road? You could try increasing the tire pressure to get a little less resistance so you can gain a little more speed.

That’s usually what I do with my kid’s bike when I get him to ride with me; he has a mountain bike and mine is a hybrid with 700×32 tires.

That’s awesome, congrats on the milestone! If you have knobbly MTB tires you might find you are a bit faster on the road/sidewalk with slicker ones. Road bikes are faster but no need to rush into buying one. Other than that just keep riding regularly and you will build up more endurance before you know it. Hydrate frequently and the wind never gets better.
