After checking my local fb marketplace listings this is the only bike that seemed reasonable. The seller is asking for 800 dollars. They admit there is some rock strikes but the frame is still in good condition. Is this something that I should consider buying or should I get a newer hardtail?

Good deal, be wary of a scam at that price though.
What kind of riding do you intend on doing? If you’re climbing and descending all day long this may be perfect and may be not. You’re getting close to scam pricing at this price but who knows maybe you just got the one person who actually understands how used bike market is supposed to work.
