Hey guys,
I'm running a SRAM NX Eagle 12-speed drivetrain, original from 2019. Never replaced the chain, cassette, or chainring until now. Easily have over 5–6000 km on it.
I've been using basic Muc-Off Dry Lube (not C3).

I just bought a new SRAM PG-1230 cassette and a new chain. While checking parts, I noticed my current 1X Race Face Cinch 30T chainring looks a bit worn. In my country I can find the same model, but also a SRAM X-SYNC 2 steel chainring for ~$15 or the aluminum version for ~$50–60. Race Face is around ~$65–70.

Would you go with the same Race Face again or switch to the cheaper SRAM steel one for durability? Is the SRAM NX chainring a better match?

  1. It’s a good idea to change a chain and rear cassette at the same time. Usually happens a few times before the chain ring(s) need it. In this case I’d say you have an opportunity to do all three for good reason. I’d change it out with that much wear showing. It makes the chain happy.

Personally yes, and wished Race face made a steel cinch oval chainring.

That chainring looks absolutely wrecked to me, therefore your chain and cassette are probably ruined too. NX is awful in terms of longevity, GX would be much better. X01 chains actually work out more cost effective per mile before they’re worn. 6000Km is probably 5000Km more than those NX chains can manage.

Get a chain tool to check the wear, and replace your chain at or before 0.5% wear. You won’t wear a cassette out for a very long time if you do that.

And pro tip (I’m a mechanic); never *ever* use a Muc-Off product, they’re terrible. You’re likely doing more damage to your drivetrain using that stuff than any other lube. If it’s got jazzy packaging, it’s generally complete sh*t. If your LBS sells it on the shop floor, walk away, or ask the mechanic out back what *they* use, and I guarantee it’s not F*ck-Off.

Steel, change all three together, chain ring, cassette if worn and chain
