Growler 40, when the bike is on the largest gear and I'm testing the shifting while the bike is upside down, everything shifts fine. When I get the the smallest gear and try to shift more it won't. When I shift the other direction and get to the largest sprocket, if I try to shoft one more time it will try to shift and throw the chain between the sprocket and wheel. Is this normal? Should it not allow this and not try to shift like it does in the other direction?

You need to adjust your limiter screws. It should be the high screw. I never remember the direction to turn them but they are two small screws that are right next to each other. The limiters limit how far the derailleur can move
Sounds like your high limit needs to be adjusted, and potentially some other things. The limit screws control where the derailleur stops, so the high limit screw needs to be turned until the chain stops falling between the hardest gear and the frame.
Watch a YouTube on how to setup your limit screws. There is a screw you need to adjust so you don’t damage your rear wheel when the chain falls off.
Had this issue on a bike my local shop put together for me. Was out a few times and had a similar issue on like the forth ride and thought it was the limiter screws. It wasn’t. My rear thru axle came a little loose. I torqued it to spec and it was good.
Just throwing that out there as that could be a potentially dangerous at the worst time.
Edit: See you got it fixed. Sweet. Make sure everything is torqued to spec every now and then.
Likely cable tension and set screws if the bike hasnt been involved in any crashes/derailleur hanger isn’t bent. There’s a great video by park tool on YouTube that can help you align things.
