I am speechless. They sold Biopace triples with 48-38-28, but no, said this mysterious seller, I'll have me a 6 teeth jump from large to middle and then a 16 teeth one from middle to small. All this with the added absurdist effect of the Biopace gears' eggish shape, thanks to the ample window we have on the smallest one where it's most accentuated. I would assume this was done as a meme if I hadn't found it on eBay. Am I just uninformed and people do this? Is this normal?

Years ago there was an adapter called the Mountain Tamer Quad that allowed a 4th ring as small as 16T to be used. The setup you have there reminds me of Sheldon Browns half-step plus granny setup.

Well, paint me with lightning and color me shocked, I have found other sets of the likes for sale – enough to promt a google, and indeed, it turns out the 50/44/28 Biopace triple was indeed A Thing. What a world we live in.

it is meant for bike with a half-step gearing plus an emergency granny gear for when the going gets really tough. People don’t do this nowadays, because half-step setups went out of fashion quite some time ago.
