The day after the jitteral had seen its GC change, there was another chance for Isak del Toro to defend. There’s a new rider in white. And while Fernat was hoping to try and move Simon Yates further towards the Mayar Roa, things had all changed. Bernal had been aggressive. Rogich was out. Ausso no longer in the general. Den Toro was still the leader, but his lead was much less. Just 26 seconds over Yates, 31 in front of Richard Karapas. And this is the profile that awaited them. 155 km for stage 17. The mighty Mortyo taken on after the pas tonal, but climbing from the easier mono side as opposed to the hellish Matzo. A finish in Borneo where only Jirro ditalia winners had ever won before. Thankfully no rain at the start but there was the usual fast, furious and frantic beginning. Really difficult to try and establish a breakaway. There was a collection of yellow Vizma Lisa bike jerseys at the front. There were a few splits with riders caught behind. Banana Yusu included. Jay Vine was off the back too. Later he’d end up abandoning the race. It all came back together for the intermediate sprint at CL hometown of former world champion Moritio Fondreest and former world champion Mas Person taking the sprint. There was an early attack from the Malar Roa. Isak del Toro getting into the front split and causing panic behind but it was quickly rectified by those involved. A big group would go away. A big group of almost 40 riders in the end. It seemed as though Visma Lisa Bike were happy as were UAE. They both had riders up there. Bisma as many as four potential helpers later in the stage for their main man Yates. At the top of the pass del Tonal there were yet more mountain points for Lorenzo Fortunato who’d made it into the break. Behind picnic postell controlled they wanted the best position for the descent. Up ahead there was their main man Roman Bald. Pi visit Maltu were riding to try and protect the general classification position outside the top 10 of young David Pigani. And at the start of the mortidol or 60 km to go, it was almost 4 minutes of a gap from breakaway that was breaking down all the time to what was left of the pelaton. An early victim of the rhythm in the main group was Antonio Tiberi in the white jersey looking after it but off the back as Roman attacked at the front towards the top of the Mortolo in the main pelatin. Richard Karapaz was looking spritly. Olalio off the front as well getting beyond Bald and selections were made there and in the Malar Roa group where Karapaz went properly very close to the top. Del Toro out of position. Helix Zari riding well close to him. Yates caught up with Amaya Rosa Bernnal as well. How would they all react? Olalio took maximum points over the top. King of the mountains already decided though. Kapaz continue to try and build a lead. Simon Yates and Malad Roa del Toro coming back. The gap was around 15 to 20 seconds at most. But Karapas with his ability on the descent will be looking to pull things out as it was getting technical and it was starting to rain a little bit. Bernnal losing a little bit of time as well and we’d have to wait to see the gaps on the groups as we got to the bottom. Elio, Katano and Valde ended up at the front. Pelidali was pushing on behind. He was trying to join Karapaz. he would do at the bottom of the group. Five riders were at the front. Stalk, Foronato, Bald, Katano, Ando, Lalio. Amay Roza tried to get things going in terms of a chase. Steinazu who’d been in the breakaway in the morning tried to drive Karapaz away, but the gap was 20 seconds at most with 32ks to go. Bodies behind, one coming back from the break. Brandon McNelte helped to tow Karapaz back and the danger was over for the moment. Out ahead, eight riders got together thinking of the stage win. Danny Martinez alongside Matias Fatk joining the front and behind the Maladosa group working hard. Q36.5 really sacrificed themselves. They were hoping to set up Pitcock with 12ks to go at the start of the final climb of the day. Riders continue to drop back. Martinez helping Pelid Zari. The gap was under 20 seconds and Bernal started to lose contact. This was another stage where there was action everywhere. Paul attacked and was out the front alone with 20 seconds of a gap. But then this, the Maya Roza going off in search of more. The only man who could live with him was Richard Karapaz. Baldi at his last grand tour with a welter stage win. tour stage wins looking for a judo stage win to complete. The set was ahead, but he was caught by the attacking Tusome with 5 and a halfks to go behind. They struggled to get organized. They were trailing by 11 seconds. Bernal in a further group back losing almost a minute. And the descent to Bornem saw a couple of curves. They were expertly navigated by the young Mexican. 21 years of age, the youngest Jirro leader this century going into the final kilometer with a handful of seconds. Katapas and Baldi looked like they were just about to miss out and that indeed proved to be true with a twisty turny rise to the finish. 24 hours after his judo looked like it was dying away. Isak del Toro was very much alive and kicking. A first ever Jirro ditalia stage win and in the Malar Roa ahead of a brokenhearted Baldi and Karapas. More bonus seconds a gap to those behind. An increase in the lead in the Malar Roa and Isak Del Toro celebrating a very special day. Yates drove home the group behind. There were good days too for G Paul Pelari and company. Pickot leading the group belonging to Bernal further back and celebration for UAE team Emirates. Mexico their young Mandel Toro very much alive and in this judo. What a way to bounce back and after being in trouble at the top of the morto even more so. Another spellbinding stage. A stage win in the pink jersey. A dream way to get your stage winning career in grand tours. Off to the right start. An increase in the lead. Two massive mountain stages still to go, but it’s looking better than it did 24 hours ago for UAE Emirates Andy Saken Toro. And a reminder that winners in Borneo have always been Jirro Ditalia winners. Will that trend continue? Watch with us every day to find out. Next up, more mountains, but they come much earlier in the stage. This could be an opportunity for the breakaway or even sprinters if they get over the early climbs. It’s down the valley onto the plane for a finish. Stage 18 with finish laps around Chisano Mo. And it’s just 144 km for the final day that could be anything for two last big GC assaults in the Vala.

Wow! What a ride
Let's go Isaac! 🇲🇽🥳🚴♂️⛰️ ¡A ganar el Giro de Italia #Torito! Todo México está orgulloso de ti. 🎉👏🏼
Tomorrow Yates dressed in pink
Are we going to ignore the fact that Caruso is in 5th?
What a statement of a stage!!
I wish we still had rob for the discovery+ commentary. Dan, Rob and Adam were a golden combo. Good times.
Wow. 8 minutes what an offering. One day we will talk about ITV hour long highlights in hushed tones.
Peloton: "Pog's not here, we can race!"
Del Toro: "Hold my gel.."
That salute at the end when del Toro won, awesome!!!
Geez this is gotta be the power of being young. Yesterday Carapaz and Bernal worked pretty hard but Del Toro was visibly exhausted. A day later Del Toro is looking strong again while the other two can't even keep up with Bardet.
This man, Rob, pronouncing every last name of every rider in the rider´s language, flawlessly. Is like he got a diploma in last names pronunciation but in every language, he makes it sound so easy, but then you try and you fail miserably. Inconceivable!
Stunning!
¡Qué buena recuperación de Isaac del Toro! Es una JOYA este chico.
Stage 18 is ideal for Wout Van Aert !
PROVING HIS TOUGHNESS, CONGRATULATIONS!
What's the drug testing like in Mexico?
Very impressive, refusing to give it up 🎉
Where's the doubters today?
Wow, what a performance from del toro! fantastic
REAL MEN PLAY BASEBALL
When the bull passed, he told those in front of him: "Here goes the cock or the Mexican chili."
Pogi would have at least 5 mins on the field, if he chose to race the Giro. Visma is in trouble at the TdF.
Always find it crazy when these guys cross the line with their mouth closed after basically racing full gas over some of the highest peaks in Europe. All down to training?
Viva mexico !! Aqui e america latina porra!!!
I’ll miss Bardet, but not the commentator murdering his name Cccccchhhhroman.
Wow what a boss move from Del Toro
Viva Mexico🎉
Oh boy congrats del toro but you are done in the last 2 mountain stages brother 😂😅😅
Kid looks like the real deal. Too bad he's on UAE
Viva mejico
Feel so bad for Bardet!
The kid has fight, thought Carapaz would take control today. Kudos to Del Toro!
Honestly, I'd love to be proven wrong, but as far as I can tell, del Toro seems to be struggling in the high mountains which makes me think he might miss out on the win (maybe even the podium) with the 2 monster stages coming up. Regardless, he's had a wonderful Giro debut, and is certainly someone to look out for in the future, also he has been a joy to watch!
This looks like the Del Toro bonked yesterday question has been answered. He missed his snickers and coke yesterday.
Bravo Isaac!!! Viva Mexico!!!
Wow what a race for Del Toro, a true champ.. A little disappointed in Bardet who drafted off Del Toro and Carapaz and didn't take his turn to pull at the front, then only to overtake Carapaz at the end to claim 2nd, that's not OK
Te deseo buena recuperacion para las ultimas etapas, somos muchos lo que te seguimos…vamos del toro ….sigue a delante…puro MX.
I hope del Toro wins the whole thing because of his performance today I hope he is recovering well, eating the perfect calories for each stage and didn't try pushing himself into the red because Yates won't give up and will probably try attack after attack until they get over the mountains because it's flat, one for sprinters who managed to stay with leading pelaton …Yates has to do something or settle for 3rd..
Ole !! Vamos !!
