Already replaced it – so don’t worry about that (see 2nd photo) with the POC Cularis. Also shout out to POC for their crash replacement coupon which knocks a good chunk off of the purchase.

Had my seasonal crash early this year (I’m fine) but dented my POC Tectal Race. It’s a sizable dent but doesn’t feel compromised.

Would you keep/ride this helmet? Toss it? Offer it up on Marketplace for free for someone without a helmet?

I’d hate to just add to the landfill. Does anybody recycle helmets?

Toss it. You know it’s cooked, someone else might not and it might cost them dearly.

    Do the right thing!

Literally any impact to a helmet can cause enough damage for it to potentially not work on the second crash.

You can’t see the internal structure of the foam, if you got another hit in the same area it might not perform as well.

Imo, not worth the risk. And I wouldn’t give it away as I’d feel irresponsible for giving someone damaged safety equipment.

you KNOW its had a crash, why would you risk using a helmet that might not save you next time..?

Throw it out now and get your next lid

do NOT sell it or give it to anyone eunless you want to have someones health or worse on your conscience

  4. It’s done for. You could ask your local fire/ambulance service if they want it? I’ve donated old lids in the past as they’re used for training.

Keep it for gravel days or when a buddy doesn’t have a helmet. A helmet is better than no helmet. Can’t wait to get roasted by redditors for this 😆

  6. No, you need to replace. Once a shock travels through the material inside the helmet, it is no longer capable of maintaining structural integrity if another shock moves through, you crash again and risk that shock going through your skull and brain instead of dispersing through the material.

Cut the straps and chuck it.

Yeah, get a new one. Don’t give it to anyone else, just toss it.

  8. I put my old helmets in the garage for display to reminisce the good old days and remember the crash that killed it.

If it took any significant hit, it’s donezo. Period. They are consumable, disposable, one time use items. It sucks, but you’re not dead, so there’s that.

  10. I don’t mess around with damaged helmets, nor would I want my worst enemy to wear one. It gets disposed of.

I have a dent in mine and I still use it. POC helmets are durable.

IMO, the idea that a helmet is cooked if it has a dent is preposterous nonsense sold to us by the helmet companies.

Before you come at me in the replies, go look up what MIPS actually is. It’s a webbing/strapping system that reduces the sheer component of an impact by allowing the helmet to rotate on the head. It has nothing to do with the type of foam they use, aside from weight.

Its true that foam can crack in an impact, which will make it less impact resistant next time, but the degree to which this would change how a helmet performs is way overblown. At the end of the day helmets are not that complex a machine. If you cover you head with something hard, it will protect you from point impacts. If that object is able to move and giveway during the impact, it will help protect you from blunt impact and strain injury. A helmet with a minor dent will still absolutely protect your head in a crash compared to not having a helmet, and the MIPS system will still function.

My general rule is to look at the inside of the helmet where the impact happened. If you see a crack on the other side, it’s cooked. If not, remember your ancestors used gourds as waterbottles and hunted wearing the skin of lions and fucking send it.

  13. I have one in my garage with a similar dent that I’ve held on to in the event someone shows up for a ride and forgot theirs, as it’s better than nothing.

After 2 years of never being used, I plan on repurposing it into a hanging planter
