RACE: Lake Sihl, Switzerland
Lake Sihl is an artificial lake located in the Swiss canton of Schwyz, near the town of Einsiedeln. It is Switzerland’s largest artificial lake in terms of surface area, with a maximum length of 8.5 kilometres (5.3 miles) and a maximum width of 2.5 kilometres (1.6 miles).
The lake was created by damming the river Sihl and flooding a section of the upper Sihl Valley. The dam, which is 33 metres (108 feet) high and 124 metres (407 feet) long, was built before 1937.
The lake serves as a reservoir for the Etzelwerk power station, located 5 kilometres (3 miles) to the northeast in Altendorf, which supplies electricity to the Swiss Federal Railways
