Hey all,
I am now the proud owner of a Trek Marlin 4, I’m in the process of getting a helmet, and I’ve been thinking I’d like to ride my bike more than just on gravel trails/off road but I don’t trust drivers where I live to not hit me. What are some things to make biking safer, and more practical for running small errands? I know lights, helmet but what other things can I do? Rn I just have the bike, nothing else besides a spare tire kit and a CO2 canister and bottle cage.

  1. A rack + basket combo in the back for errands and familiarizing yourself with your area to find less populated roads/sidestreets where you’d be comfortable riding along even if it takes longer to get to your destination.

i recommend a stem raiser for a higher ridding position, i’ve found that way i can perceive everything on the road , and it’s easier on your back. Bike gloves , and this one is just me , here but overgrip racket tape/wrappings . it’s alot cheaper than bike tape, and you can wrap it over your handle bar grips, and it absolves a lot of riding shock ( i have 4 wraps on each side of my handle bar) .Also a bike chain guard just to stop your chain from marking up your bike.

  3. A hi-vis vest if you are new to riding in the street, you can also grab little side mirrors that can be attached at the bar ends. Rear rack that can also accommodate panniers. If you can invest in a small dash cam or action sport camera that can be attached to your helmet would also be a good deterrent for reckless drivers.
