Too much to unpack in a single post.
Look up “joy of bike” on youtube. Great tutorials on jumping, and all aspects of riding.

Stand up straight when you hit the lip – don’t lean back with the bike or you’re coming off the back – don’t sit down and lean forward or you do what happened in that video

don’t forget your bike when jumping
ike1414 on
Ummm not like that…
Before the jump you were already basically sitting on the rear tire. Going up you shifted more weight back and then the front dropped and catapulted you forward. You want to be centered on the bike and compress into the face of the jump, then “jump” your body. Imagine how you would jump that if you were just on your feet.
YouTube will be your friend for getting a better understanding.

Horse and rider must be as one. Load the bike into the lip and travel off the lip together, easier said than done but nowhere to go but up

You’re way too far back. Looks like you’re trying to manual.
Got your arse on the back wheel by the looks of it and bucked yourself over the bars.
Neth009 on
When you hit that jump, it looked like you did everything to attempt to keep the bike from jumping. This is what launched you off the bike and kept the bike down.
Start with learning to bunny hop and manual on flat ground. Then practice small drops and slowly lead to small jumps.

Whatever you did there, do the opposite.
Ramambahara on
Before the takeoff starts you compress (move your body as low to the ground as possible). On takeoff you stand up completely.
Ideally, so that you are completely upright and vertical approximately when your front wheel goes into the air from the takeoff. When standing up you end up with your arms more or less straight and your bars close to the heaps. Important part — your body needs to end up and keep being vertical during the last stages of takeoff.
You don’t have to do the compress part – it will just add height to the jump.
You do have to do the standup part though. This way you keep your body stable and disconnected from the position of your bike, making sure you are not turning your bike into a human catapult.
Don’t ride into a jump with your ass hanging out over the rear axle for one.
Thanks for vid though – an entertaining physics lesson.

Kind of like you would without a bike. Crouch and then explode upward lifting your mid section using your legs. From the video you are totally passive you just rolled up to the the lip of the jump so yeah no other outcome was going to take place there other than the one you experienced.

Were you trying to bail? I genuinely have no idea what’s going on in this video, it looks like you jumped off your bike after you “landed”
According to your profile your first mountain bike came only 12 days ago. I’d spend some more time getting comfortable on the bike before you become airborne again. The internet can give you all the tips in the world on how to jump but you need some hours on the bike.
derycksan71 on
1. Learn how to bunny hop. 2. Practice bunny hopping of curbs 3. Bunny hop on small jumps/lips.
That’s the gist of it, you’re bunny hopping of of a jump. The steepness and size are things you adjust for but the foundation is the same.
GreenSkyPiggy on
Do any of your friends in that video know how to jump? If they do, they are your opps for not teaching you shit. Learn to manual and bunny hop before progressing to jumps. I wish you a smooth recovery.

Ya see, I was going to jump in here with the “not like that” crew, but if this attempt didn’t scare you off this is honestly a great bail run. Get used to fucking up and learn to recover. Now there’s definitely some improvement on the bail and recovery but the game is 90% mental so if this is in the back of your head and you still hit the jumps then you’re over a massive hurdle.
Plenty of advice out there on how to jump and how not to, but you stick with this and I’d be surprised if you aren’t posting bombers in no time.

I know this jump well at Allaire. It is too much for someone just starting out since you need so much speed for it. Better to start out with the other jump in that pit that is a little smaller.

You need to jump WITH the bike, NOT OFF the bike
Alberta58 on
Definitely youtube it but also imagine you were trying to jump over this gap on your feet. You’d probably get some speed up, get low, and explode from your lower body through your upper body and lify yourself up and over the jump. It would be very active, this was not active.

The amount of people that apparently never grew up jumping curbs is astonishing. Depressing, really. Sorry OP, but your post made me think a bit.
Back in the 80s and 90s, and most certainly earlier, 9 out of 10 kids from the block could have hucked that jump with whatever shitbox bike they had and never even have the urge to film it. Hell, they wouldn’t even consider it a big deal.
Do yourself a favor. Quit reading about the latest theories in geometry, which fork is the best, what tire works the best, quit watching YT tutorials. Get on your bike and ride. Find some friends that ride and stick with it.

Wow balls to you for sending it with NO experience
You want to “preload” yourself by crouching and you want to “pop” with the bike WITH THE BIKE which you did NOT do before. At that point it’s about air control and positioning, judge your distance and control the nose and tuck your rear to try and align with the landing, as a newbie you’ll want to push your tail down, DONT. You will case it, try and imagine you and the bike as a line flowing over the jump and trace that line, STEEZ.

Remember that your body is the one jumping, not the bike. You need to maintain balance as you load your jump to create the lift. You are also anticipating the jump rather than following through.

Imo, you need to learn bunny hop, then do jumps.
