My vintage Miyata 310 has toe cages and I suck at using them. Any tips on how to use them? I tend to either hit the pedal too hard and can't get my foot in unless I'm looking at it lol.
Put the ball of your foot onto the pedal and gently begin rotating it. Flick your foot down and forwards into the toe clip. Try it while not moving, hold on to a wall etc.

Any particular reason you don’t use clipless pedals? Cuz that would be my recommendation lol, clips will be way easier if you want to be able to clip in.
I run clips on one side, flats on the other side, so I can still use normal shoes when I want to. You’ll have a similar thing there you’ll have to spin the pedal to get the right side, but it’s less hard than with toe cages imo

might want to swap out the pedals. when i was riding with clips, the pedal had an extra tooth that would help flip the pedal so you could easily slide your foot in when you rolled it with the ball of your foot. you can see it in this [example](https://images.app.goo.gl/sxT4h7UGY6yM54pp7)

Stand on a curb with the bike on the street so you can straddle the bike easily without falling over and just practice flipping the pedal and getting your toes into the cage like a bunch of times without looking down. Then flip the bike around and practice with your other foot.
Then hop on the bike and continue to practice your technique somewhere quiet and safe like the street in front of your house or a park until you feel comfortable.
