I’ve been looking for a vintage ATB / MTB for a little while now. After striking out on a GT Backwoods, I found this in a town that I happened to be passing through during travels. I’ve read that these bikes tend to have a lot in common with contemporary touring bikes. I have a Fuji Touring Series V, which is also from 1984, but it feels drastically different.
The Miyata feels a lot more lively and responds better to nearly every input. I’m sure some of that is due to the bar differences, but that certainly can’t be all of it… Anyways, it has a 19.5” frame. I typically ride 21” MTBs, but this fits pretty good with the seat all the way back and at the right height. It doesn’t have the stock seat and I’d like one with longer rails so I can scoot it back more (or a seat post with similar accommodations). Someone upgraded the RD to a Deore variant, which is fantastic! Anyways, it’s a wonderful bike and now I’m very curious to try other Miyatas. Can anyone speak to the similarities / differences between touring bikes and ATB / MTBs from the 80s and early 90s?
* Note, I’ve not had either the Fuji nor the Miyata apart to re grease bearings, so that could definitely be part of this.
