May just really need to be serviced but it’s also kinda a know issue with the EXP version of internals. I can’t tell from the pic if it’s actually EXP or not.

You might get lucky and get away with a service on the freehub. Could just be the grease gotten really think and holding in the pawls.

Looks like a DT Swiss 340. In that case, he probably broke the star ratchet in the freehub, or maybe the spring for some reason stopped providing outward force. It should be fairly obvious when the hub is disassembled, and simple enough to repair, but he’ll need to call a ride home.
