Ack. I had that happen commuting to my last job, and a spoke broke too, and a co-worker lost a car tire from the same pile or nail-trash.

It always amazes me how tires can pick up and get punctured in the oddest ways. I had a similar puncture to yours that almost imbeded itself into my rim. As if it were a punji planted in the road, but was actually lying flat.
Once a twig with an even smaller branch, gave me a flat. I saw the twig and kicked off the path. I replaced the tube and rode home. When trying to patch the punctured tube, I found a piece of that twig inside the tube.
