Spotted this on the train in Tacoma on Square Root Day. The owner thought eighties on nineties, I thought seventies or eighties.

He did say he got it “from those crazy guys at [second cycle](https://www.2ndcycle.org/)”, so it’s likely a Frankenstein.

I thought suicide shifters had been dropped from production by the nineties, am I mistaken?

  2. Road bikes stopped using down tube shifters primarily in the 1990s with the introduction of Shimano’s STI (Total Integration) shifters so I’d guess this being a higher end bike that it’s mid 1980’s.

More likely late 80s through 90s. Lemond makes some nice bikes. You could still get friction shifter in the 90s

  4. That’s a 1997 LeMond Buenos Aries. The bike originally had Shimano 105 STI shifters.

  5. Welded steel construction so probably not eighties, or very late eighties. Certainly not 70’s. I’d guess mid 90’s.

Oh, apparently Reynolds 853 was launched in 1995, so definitely after that.

LeMond used this paint scheme for the Buenos Aires in 1997. The downtube shifters are not original to the bike but it had shifter bosses on the frame, so it’s simple to add them, as a previous owner has done. It’s a nice frame.
