Hello! I don't know much about bikes but recently got this secondhand Huffy at a yard sale. As you can see in the second photo this part has broken off from the piece it's supposed to be attached to. I don't know what to search to look for a replacement part because none of the diagrams of bike tires that I looked up have it on them. Does anyone know what it's called?

And also, does anyone know if it would be okay if I just removed the piece without replacing it?

I guess you’d just call that the fender bracket.

You can take the rear fender off entirely if you wish. The rear fenders only job is to keep water/mud off you and the bike.

Mudguard or fender stay. You can take it off but your mudguard will probably wobble about and foul your wheel while you ride so I highly reccomend replacing it if you plan to keep the mudguard on.

  3. I believe it’s part of the fender and it’s not a part by itself. If I wanted to make up a name for it, it would be fender support or fender bracket or “fenderstay”

It is the fender support. Not likely a part that is replaceable on its own, but some metal fenders might have one that is removable/swappable if you don’t want to replace the fender or remove it. https://a.co/d/3jYCPWK
You could have someone drill a hole in support and fender and rivet back together.

the fender-holdocaster. Yeah, okay. Support Rod.

_If you remove it, the fender will shake too much, maybe rub or make noise_

  6. I can’t see that it’s broken off, or how it’s broken off. I think those are usually riveted to the fender. Can you see a hole in both the stay and the fender where it would have been riveted? If so, you can put another rivet in (I’m sure an appropriate pop rivet would be fine) or a short nut and bolt.

*Definitely* do not ride with this hanging loose, if it is. If anything gets into your wheel while riding it’ll cause big trouble; fender mounting should be treated as critical and inspected every time you ride.
