Some time ago we cycled the Drava Cycle Route (Drauradweg) in Carinthia, Austria – one of the most well-developed and reliable long-distance cycling routes in Europe. It runs from the Italian to the Slovenian border and is one of only a few routes awarded the highest ADFC quality rating. Well-marked, scenic and supported by good infrastructure, it’s definitely a “safe pick” if you’re planning a cycling trip in the region. These are some memories from that ride:

The Drauradweg came to my mind because next week we’re heading back to Carinthia for a cycling rally – a new event that combines day rides on routes like the Drau and the Carinthian Lakes Loop with cultural and entertainment programs in the evenings. The event starts in Villach – if anyone’s nearby, there’s still time to join. If you’re into scenic “subalpine” cycling with good logistics, Carinthia really delivers.
