Push the derailleur all the way back, pop in the little button with the lock symbol on it. That keeps the derailleur out of the way. Then just unscrew the axle, black part with the fancy arrow. Turns opposite direction of the arrow.

Ignore the dual bolt brackets, those are for setting up a singlespeed or internal hub.

  2. Put the correct size hex wrench (5 or 6mm) into the axle in the first photo and turn counter clockwise to remove the axle. It will also be easier to remove the wheel if the chain is in the smallest cog.

You turn the screw on the first picture in the opposite direction the arrow is pointing.

    This is the thru axle

It’s a thru axel. You need to release from the non drivetrain side with a hex key – it looks like it’s stripped though so you might struggle. I suggest trying to get a new one.

  5. Is it not as simple as using an Allen key to undo the thru axle? (Perhaps that arrow indicates it is a left hand thread?)

  6. Looks like a standard 12mm thru axle. Is it seized? It looks like it may be stripped now. Cover your brake with a plastic bag and spray some penetrating fluid into the threads on the drive side and let it sit. You may need a new axle.

Looks like someone put red Loctite on the thru-axle… may the odds be in your favor that you can get it free!

  8. Paragon Machine Works style sliding drop outs with a through axle. Is the the hex head stripped on the axle? It looks very scratched up. Should just unthread and slide out unless it is seized. I have Paragon’s axle with a handle, easy on and off.

For your safety if your level of bike mechanic skill has you asking if it’s electric shifting get help with it. It’s really simple once you’ve gotten some guidance.
