Honestly I have no clue on how to spot a good bike, so help would be appreciated. Wanting to know if this used bike I found on Facebook would be good for a short 15/20 minute commute, which is mostly uphill.
I'm broke and want to avoid using my vehicle whenever possible due to car problems. My plan was honestly just gonna be to buy a cheap one from Walmart but decided to try looking around for used ones instead. I live in a small town so options close to me are very very limited though.
I am very willing to learn how to fix and maintain a bike. Does this one look like it needs work?

As long as there is nothing broken on it this will be fine. Trek makes good enough bikes, and this should be plenty comfortable for 20 min rides. If it has the original gears, then hills should be easy enough (24 front, 32 rear means that one turn of the pedals only turns the wheels 3/4)

If your commute is all on pavement you might benefit from (in the near future) getting smoother tires to reduce some vibration
