Will likely keep the brake levers, stem and cranks, maybe FD too for the bin… luckily it’s not my size or I’d be tempted to keep this beautiful frame…. Second time I’ve done this in the last month though where (price of whole ass bike) < (price of friction shifters off eBay)… will be dropping the frames and odd parts off at the local co-op in an attempt balance my karma

Yep. I’ve purchased a few full bikes with top-mount Deore XT “thumbies” (with the index/no-index switch and a ghost click to support either 7- or 8-speed setups) just to harvest the shifters. They often do have other cool parts that end up in my bins or at my local co-op… but short answer: YES.

Looks like you’re chasing the downtube version of my flat-bar “thumbies”. Score!

  2. 🙋‍♂️Guilty. I’ve done it for a wheelset, which is reasonable.. but I also did it once just because I thought the front centerpull would be quirky fun to put on my fixed gear. Still haven’t even pulled that brake on a ride 😅

  3. I bought a weird chunky aluminum Trek 8300 or whatever because the guy had suntour power ratchets on it. Bike was too big for me anyway. I swapped the shifters out for something way more generic yet still usable, sold it for the same price I paid for it, and bam free awesome shifters for my 950.

  4. I see two rock hoppers on our local classifieds with OG deore deer derailer and sun tour power ratchet shifters. I don’t even have a bike for them. But at 100.00 a bike I feel like I
    Should flip them

  5. Yessir, hauled a whole ass bike just for the fucking bottlecage, sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do for the mythic items

Of course! Buy em. strip all the parts. them play a game of swapping bits out with my other bikes to get the ‘perfect’ combos.

  7. I bought a whole bike for the brake calipers last week, then someone offered me better calipers for even less! I’ve already stripped the bike down so I’ll try to sell enough bits to make my money back then give the rest away to the local bike workshop.

I see so many tempting deals but I’m trying not to turn my garage into a breakers yard!

Just about to do this today for the cranks and gearset. Then I was like what’s the point of building my own.

  9. Yep, but old Vitus aluminum to get the Dura Ace.
What did you want off the nashbar pictured?

No, but only because that feels like a good way to inch toward divorce.

No. I’ve only bought bikes for the frames or bikes for the Dura Ace or XT group sets. Is it that hard to get DT shifters now?

Holy crap just looked at the prices on them lol.

Sorta.. I got a $50 Raleigh Chromica RC because it was all deore lx 560 instead of STX RC. I swapped in the XT /Ritchey wheels and smiled.
