Today was my first commute to the station in five years. I got my beater bike all ready. About two miles in, my pannier rack shit itself and fell off the back. I think with the weight of my bag this'll keep happening unless I wield the silver bits to the black bits – and I'm no wielder. So I'm in the market for a new pannier rack. One where the stays are held on with more than just friction. It also needs to have a vertical bar so that it'll work with my Ortlieb Backroller. I'm in the UK and looking to spend up to around £50.

Thanks

  1. I would recommend going into a bike shop to see what misc hardware they have for fitting racks. There’s usually a few ways to affix the front the rack to your frame. Either the sliding rakes you have, a middle brake bridge mount (my fav), a seatpost clamp mount, or a seat tube clamp mount. These are just the few I’m aware of. I’m wondering if your current hardware would still work if it was tightened down enough, maybe some loctite could help

Have you tried tightening those bolts all the way and/or carrying less than 50kg?

I prefer front pannier racks. Shifts some weight off the back wheel and you can see if it falls off.

Those stays don’t carry significant weight. The load path for the weight is to where it attaches near the axle. You just need to tighten the stays to the rack hard enough that they won’t slip.

I’m not sure what happened there, but that’s not typical.

Mine has a similar arrangement. I was using P clips on the chain stays because I didn’t have screws. Eventually one of the P clips broke and I took the strut off. The rack is doing fine with only one upper strut. I carry a lot of weight. The rack was hit by a car – before the P clip broke. It’s Axiom, and pretty bombproof, but I don’t especially recommend it because it’s made for disk brakes.

It kind of depends how much you want to spend. If you want to do $150 you can get Nitto, Velo Orange, Surly, Soma, or Tubus. Other $50 options are: Planet Bike, Blackburn, Wald, and Axiom.

I can’t vouch for: Pelago, Public, Linus, and Everyday, but they seem ok.
