One piece cranks are typically made of inferior materials. Basically the cheapest thing used to get the bike riding. Time for an upgrade!

The metal of the crank was broken off above the pedal, and since the pedal was threaded into the crank, the pedal is still attached. Could have been from fatigue, or poor quality metal. Could have also been from an impact to the side of the pedal snapping the crank. Hope this explanation helps.
