It’s early May bank holiday here in the UK. Saturday morning of the long weekend, I decided to take the bike out on the lanes of rural Essex. I started at Tri Farm where there is a stunning lake where Triathletes train for outdoor water swimming. From there I meandered through the lanes up to the Blue Egg Cafe, a popular spot for cyclists and motorcyclists alike. A quick turn around and back to Tri Farm for the 11am cut off.

So, uh it is Saturday of the long weekend. Uh it is sunny, very sunny, lovely day. I have started my ride somewhere a bit different today in Essex, but uh at a place called Tri Farm, which is a lake that triathletes train at. Really, really lovely place to swim actually. Uh I haven’t swam today. Uh but I did start the ride there and I am going to try some different roads today. Head out towards a place called Finching Field which is a really popular spot for motorcyclists uh and cyclists alike. It’s in the Essex countryside. So should be just a about 30ks out from here to there uh all through the rural roads of Essex. So, I’m really looking forward to it. Weather is really beautiful. Better than forecast, actually. It was supposed to be a bit overcast, but seems fine so far. So, yeah, looking forward to this ride. [Music] [Music] So, I’m on route just uh cycling around the edge of Chelmsford, I think. Uh it’s interesting. Kimoot does seem to find really good little cycle paths. Uh so, I’m on one at the moment. Just been through a kind of little private development called Great Notly, which was very pretty, and then come out onto this cycle path. So, I do like Commute. You do always end up with a bit of an adventure when you plan your route on commute rather than just Google Maps or something. So, yeah, well done, Kimoot. This is a great little cycle path. [Music] Just stopped to uh take in this field. Got the all the yellow. I think it’s rape flowers. I think that’s what they make the rape seed oil from. But uh yeah, it looks pretty incredible. And it was right by the side of the road. So, I thought I’d just pull over and take a look. Yeah, it’s nice this time of year when you’ve got all the colors by the side of the road. You’ve got like purple crops and yellow crops. I think the purple ones are I looked it up. It’s like some sort of crop they’ve started planting in the last couple of years to go between the early season crops and the late season crops to reenrich the soils. Uh so it’s good to see that cuz I noticed that basically when I’ve been cycling the last last two seasons there’s been these bright purple flowers which is why I looked it up cuz hadn’t seen them before. But uh yeah, lovely lovely day. Nice and warm. Uh nice and sunny. It was forecast to be overcast and 14°, but I would say it’s a lot warmer than that. And it’s definitely not overcast at the moment. So, happy days. That’s always uh that’s always the nice direction for the forecast to be wrong in. So, yeah, about 25ks in. Going to do I think close to 60ks uh by the time I get back to Tri Farm. So yeah, having fun so far [Music] So, uh, I’ve actually stopped just before Flynchfield, uh, at a place called the Blue Egg. Uh, it’s a really popular spot with cyclists and motorcyclists to stop for coffee, cake, you know, breakfast, whatever. Uh, I was going to try and grab a quick coffee, but there is a massive queue in there, so I don’t have time. basically. So, I’m going to now quickly replan my route back to Tri Farm because I’ve got about an hour to get back. Uh so, so yeah, enjoying the sunshine, enjoying all the scenery. Roads in Essex are epic. Honestly, it’s like south of France. All right, maybe not, but pretty close, especially when the weather’s like this. Just smooth tarmac, empty roads. Really, really enjoying it today. Legs feel a bit heavy. Uh the 207k ride last weekend is definitely still in my legs. I just don’t quite have the same uh power output. I can see it on the power meter, but you know, that’s to be expected after a really big epic adventure like that. So yeah, just taking it easy. Should be about 55ks in total today, but we’ll see when I get back how much. So yeah, having fun. [Music] So, I finished the ride. Uh just under 60ks in total. Uh start and finish at Tri Farm Lake behind me. Triathletes come here and they uh do uh loops of the lake, practice their swimming. Uh be beautiful, beautiful spot. Um so yeah, all in all had fun. I was under a bit of time pressure to get back here cuz this place closes at 11:00. Uh so the ride back I had to push quite hard. Uh, so let’s see how my legs come up tomorrow. Um, but yeah, had fun. Beautiful empty roads, beautiful sunshine. What a blast.

  1. That was a great run and like you say the roads look epic and although I do similar runs in Cheshire the lanes are broken to bits and it’s rough on the bike ! Did you spot the rabbit at 4.18? A young spring rabbit enjoying the sun🌞Pity about the cafe being packed but it’s like most things these days everywhere you go it’s rammed . Nice quality video Carl and I will catch you on your next trip 👍🥇🎥🚴‍♂️👌
