Hello, new to the sub. Finally pulled my bike down from the attic. Now that my son is riding, I figured I'd get back on the horse. Broke it down and did some deep cleaning. I need some help and opinions on how to tackle this.

These are all the parts I have left because I am replacing all the GT parts to make it modern. I ended up with all Odyssey for everything else not pictured (because I golf I went with that brand).

My questions are.

Should I keep it as is with wore down stickers and surface rust or sand it down and paint it with new stickers from eBay seller?

Where is best place to find picture/video of schematics of this Dyno? (My dumbass forgot to take picture/video of the teardown) (Mainly need the crank assembly).

Is there any modern cranks and bearings for these old bikes or got to stick with the old?

What grease should I use for the bearings if sticking with the old one?

Thanks in advance for any help and any tips you may suggest, been out of this game for long time. But gotta show the young one a thing or two.

You could put some new stickers on it, but don’t sand it or do anything like that what would be real nice keep all the original parts maybe buy some new tires for it handle grips and just get the bike redipped oh and some nice GT platform metal pedals

Alright man, buckle up. This is a long post.

I recently picked up a ’99 compe that was chrome. had been neglected and left outside. tons of rust on it. patches of chrome were flaking off, exposing the bare metal and it had rust on it, too. bike came with handlebars, frame/fork, two wheels and tires. nothing else.

i proceeded to restore/refurbish this thing. first thing i did was clean it up, take out the head/crank bushings, stem, handlebars, etc. much like your photo. i then bought citric acid, baking soda, a couple of tubs from home depot and filled up about 20 gallons of water (around $80 – $100 all-in). used chat gpt to make the acid bath and neutralizing bath mixtures, gave it photos of the parts before/during the process and used it to determine soak times. bike came out really well. was able to brush off the rust with a brass brush, and then put a couple coats of renaissance wax on top. it didn’t affect the stickers/decals.

went to bmx catalogue and looked up the ’99 compe. found out what kind of parts it had as OEM. here’s yours: [https://www.bmx-catalogue.com/dyno/mid-school/1997/compe.html](https://www.bmx-catalogue.com/dyno/mid-school/1997/compe.html)

found a sproket/crank, bearings and drainpipe seat post on ebay, bought hand grips, gyro parts (it uses 1″, now everything is 1 1/8″) luckily i had the base on the head from the original and just did some cold bluing on it then used the other parts from the odyssey kit. front/rear brakes, cables, levers.. everything to spec (that i could) got everything from porkchop bmx, eriks, and dan’s comp.

stickers were tore to hell, but i left them because i didn’t rechrome it, and its basically in “survivor state”. first thing you do when you drop that thing after a new paint job is curse the sky.

used marine grease and repacked the bearings. if the race is in good condition and the ball bearings aren’t pitted, you should be fine.

anyways, soak everything you have there in citric acid. frame, fork, bearings, stem and the rust will vanish.

i also found a barn find 2001 compe, and that had everything original. it is also chrome frame but black handlebars and fork, and i used steel wool/sos pads on the chrome to pull the rust. (only works on chrome)

    hope this helps.
