I discovered this while cleaning my bike after a ride the other day. Has this happened to anyone else? Should I look for damage inside the headset or fork or is this just a faulty plastic headset top cap. Thank yall for chiming in i just want to learn whatever i can🤘 I have had the bike for a year and half and ridden maybe 2800 miles on the bike on primarily pavement.

I dont know the specific construction/design of the headset. If the piece is just a plastic cover for visuals/aero, then there shouldnt be an issue. If it is however a structural issue, the headset will most likely have play in it. An easy way to test is to pull the front break and then push horizontally on your stem, basically inline with the top tube. If you can feel a distinct “hit” and especially if you can see the fork move, there is definitely something wrong. But that doesnt mean its okay if nothing happens, it could still have issues under load/weight. Again, i dont know the specific construction of the headset, so if its strictural, id definitely take a look/take the stem of and inspect or bring it to a mechanic
