The fight for the never- ending trophy began in Albania. The first 3-week amazing journey of the season. A cycling soap opera, the jidalia grand tour season had arrived. What a start list as well. Primo roglitch winner two years ago. Former world champion Mars Pearson and plenty of others. Agon Bernal as well. Another of the five former winners present. The stage would be an opening cracker starting in Dur on the Adriatic coast heading inland and towards the Albanian capital Tidana. Two early intermediate sprints for the Malia Clamino. A second category climb and then the Red Bull kilometer. 64 and two bonus seconds for the first three across. A couple climbs of Surell just outside the capital and then an opportunity for the fast riders or maybe even GC contenders to have a go. It was an open one. 160 km to ride, almost 2,000 m to climb. The Jidalia would have a starting bonanza. The fight for the breakaway wasn’t that big. 5 km it lasted and in the end five riders got up the road including Taco Fond Horn, a former Jirro stage winner. Walt Fernat was one of those hoping to become the first Malar Roawa. And to that end, his team and two others, Little Trek as well as Vizmissa bike being helped out too by Alpacas Kernik who were hoping to put Kaden Groves in pink. Primoich raced on and those hoping for pink, well, they didn’t let the gap grow more than 2 minutes. Onto the first of the categorized climbs, and there’d soon be a change in those at the front of the race. Steven Carl’s fake was the man doing the work behind. The gap was down to a minute maximum of just under two minutes. Taco Vodhorn dropped and at the top of the climb, Silan Monik of Kufuis going through to take the 18 points. That put himself in prime position to take the first blue King of the Mountains jersey. A single point for Lorenzo Fortunato behind would suggest that he’s ready to try and build a challenge for the Maladzura over the course of three weeks. The break continued to break up ahead, but they get back together for the Red Bull kilometer. And the fact that they were there to take the sprint meant that there was no worry for the GC teams behind. And what a sprint it was. Manuel Taroti just about getting the better of Aleandro Tonelli. The chase on behind meant that with 40 km to go, everything was brought back. What would happen then? Who would work? We’d find out soon and soon enough because on the first of the two ascents of Surell, there were already casualties. Problems out the back for Olaf Koy also dropped other bigname sprinters like Sam Bennett and Little Trek with the team doing the damage. Dan aller continuing to ride for Mars Bison. Koi struggling, other sprinters joining him. The bell would ring with 22 kilometers to go. One more lap and a chance maybe for the Pelatin to get even smaller. Would it tempt the GC teams out as well? That’s what many were starting to wonder. Primo Rogic often a man who gobbles up these sorts of finishes from small groups. One was there as well. He’d crashed earlier in the day. How would he fare here? It was nervous on the second climb. Fernat was hanging on to the wheel as much as he could. Roglitch was there, too. It was a continuous fight for position. Kaden Groves, the last of the bigname sprinters to be dropped. He’d hung on well on the first descent, but then the GC shocks came as well on the opening day. Timardsman, a top 10 finisher in the last two years, already losing time. He was dropped well before the top as was Derek G. And with Chicorn leading them over, there was an opportunity on the descent to try and string things out. Fernat and Pearson were still there, but unfortunately there was some bad news on the way in. A really bad crash for Mikuel Lander and that he would have to abandon the jitteralia in some fine form as well. He went off over the pavement. Jay Vine going down to as was Corbyn Strong. But Lander leaving the race. A GC blow. Apart from G most others making it and those fighting for the stage made it as well. The lead out came from Vat. Person was there to sprint. While Fernart was trying to come around him was up there. Aar Pcoock but it was right to the line in the end. Half a wheel in it and won by Mars Person already a stage winner. Aino now a Maya Rosa wearer. They went after the stage. Am my did they take it first stage going to lead pink jersey to Mars Pillison and behind they were counting the cost over a minute and a half to Ardensman. Not good news for the Dutchman from Inos. This was the moment the stage was won. Fernard taking a few bonus seconds for that second place and he’ll be looking for the Mayar Roza on day two in the time trial. But Bison taking a huge victory and wearing the pink jersey. The first Danish rider ever to do so. So Pearson, Fernat, Allard, the top three, Bzato, Piccolo, Fuli, Karapas, Ponchi, and Pigansi in the top 10 on a blockbuster of an opening day. A huge moment for Mar foregoing the tour to France this year in favor of Jirro Ambua. And it’s worked. He’s in the pink jersey just ahead of Watford. 4 seconds the difference in the first GC. Alad in third and a couple of notable casualties. But the pink jersey on the back of Mars Pilson, a moment to savor for the Danish former world champion. Next up, the time trial. 13.7 km in and around the Albanian capital Tana. Part of the 42ks in total against the clock at this race. Plenty of twists and turns on city roads. Climbing Salk and back towards the finish. And with time gaps close, Benson, I’m sure, will try to defend, but the Malar Roa could well be in play for a different wear at the end of day two. You can watch the Jed Italia live and on demand each and every day on TNT Sports and Discovery Plus.

  1. Pedersen has definitely been on fire this season… but damn… how many 2nd place finishes has Wout had in his career??? Has to be a record. He comes SO close SO often… I think he has some kind of mental block about winning races… because in a sprint finish like this, the effort is identical for both positions… so the difference has to be mental.

  2. Wout vs Mads 200m to go. It's going to be Mads every time. He's a pure sprinter that Wout has never been. For Wout, this is an amazing finishing considering his health condition.

  3. Wake me up when Stage 15 comes.

Stage 7 has certain potential but realistically until 15 it will be a straight snoozefest.

  4. Landa stop the giro italia ,he pain the back ,im from albania i see news from hospital, but i dont know why he aciddent because he knew the streer it was two time they did same street
