At my on-campus bike shop I was told that I should consider getting a new chainring set for my bike. They dont make money based on sales or anything so they werent motivated by trying to sell me anything, theyre just student workers. They dont even sell chainrings there, so I figured I’d ask some more people who know more than me, did he just suggest I get a new chainring for not really any reason or should I get a new one? thanks!

Yes, the teeth shouldn’t look directional like that in your 2nd photo. It’ll wear your chain out faster and shift badly/skip more often.
Chains and chainrings have to get along
Cassettes are far more forgiving
You can try a new chain. But you probably want a new chain and a new ring
Good luck. It took my LBS 2 weeks to track one down.
