Following on from the our earlier show about the worst road bike tech flops of all time, Ollie takes a look at the cycling tech failures that YOU recommended. Remember Shimano Airlines? The mountain bike groupset that used compressed air to shift gears. How about the motorbike that nearly crippled Cannondale? We also take a look at the fastest thru axle ever and a new snack of the week.

[Music] welcome to the gcn tech show this week we’ve got a superfast through axle the bike vault your upgrades and even more of the biggest tech flops of all time [Music] a couple of weeks ago we did an episode on the greatest hit flops of all time and we thought we’d hit the nail on the head and gotten everything either but you guys have reminded us of many more even greater flops come on ollie let’s share a few the submissions yeah without further ado tech flops part two so first we had a comment from jacob nelson who said flop remember and Cannondale made motorcycles for motocross this is a great shout jacob so 20 years ago Cannondale tried to launch an all-american motocross bike the MX 400 it was launched in 1999 but it was bereft with problems and delays and no bike shipped until 2001 it was touted as the great all-american motocross hope it’s meant to be the bike that would take on the great bikes of the time from Europe and Japan but unfortunately it’s a bit of a flop now I’m gonna read this off the page motocross action magazine reviewed the bike at the time and with the words are quite heavy going actually would your dream bike be slow heavy complicated unreliable poorly suspended and with poor handling when you start with a blank sheet of paper there is no one to blame but yourself Cannondale needed to buy an eraser and start over again yes that’s a scathing review on it was a flop that cost Cannondale 80 million US dollars oh it’s hard to believe how much but well yeah I know but I mean at least John Connor didn’t try and escape from the t1000 aboard one he had a Yamaha XR 80 I mean if he’d used the Cannondale Judgment Day probably would have happened so Yamaha me keyboards next up a comment from double-plus good who said did anyone say bio pace loved it myself really loved it so she might a fire pace if you’re not aware they were the first commercially available oval chainrings oval chainring somewhat of a trend at the moment in the last 10 years partly off the back of Reuters design which effectively took the Shimano bio bases a little bit to it than this slightly different shape as well by Paige was 90 degrees off meaning you spent longer in the dead spot where you can exert the least amount of force on your pedal had they rotated that design 90 degrees you were spent longer in the power part of the stroke pin out you know affected me with larger gearing propelling yourself forwards even further and then accelerate yourself to dead spot what it can’t quite work out how they got it so wrong but stop they did it’s interesting how they got it how they were close but no cigar well he did that I’ve got good one now Shimano Airlines guys from GM BN row so forget hydro shifting forget DI to forget cables Shimano Airlines changed gear using compressed air yeah it was a mountain bike group set but had it been successful it probably would have been a road version Wow now I’m just looking at picture of it there and I remember those adverts in the back of the mat bought magazines back in the late 90s early 2000s she might have chose to develop the system because the completely sealed hoses were able to be more flexible than cable routing on the tile and the lows on the long travel suspension fighter they used back then and also it wouldn’t be affected by moisture apparently yeah it featured a removable gas canister that you put on your top tube safe which was 300 centimeters cubed and reportedly good enough for up to 400 shifts everything was controlled by a adjustable regulator kind of like a di2 junction box but for 400 shifts you say only right now you know I rode together on the weekend don’t we we did just under three hours yeah and because I’ve got a clever group set and while here on my bike I know for a fact that I shifted nine hundred and eighty six times so you would have got half less than halfway what I would have been I’ve been in a single speed all the way well the good news is that you could actually stop during the ride and recharge your cylinder with a pump so interesting so we only would have had to stop twice could have pumped up your gears yeah I could miss me I don’t carry upon what I’m training I’ve got achieve this these days you imagine that don’t carry a pump okay with the gas canister maybe the only thing I would say is that the shifting was meant to be really really lightweight but just let you tap is these days you use one lever for shifting down into a lower gear and wolly before shifting up until high again up ahead of its time also one buy it was a bit ahead of its time there’s one by seven group sets a yeah yeah interesting well anyway we hope you’ve had a well hope you’ve enjoyed this look at some of the biggest tech flops and also your suggestions for big tech flops coming cuz we’ve only scratched the surface and I think this is a topic we’re gonna revisit again because it’s good to look at so let us know entertaining in the comments down below hot tech now is this the fastest thru-axle in the world Theo Panagiotis from Greece assent as this clip of his invention which he is claiming is the fastest thru-axle to be inserted and removed in the world now the reason for developing this is that riders these days are quite concerns that with the standard through axle scure which you have to wind all the way in is gonna be slower than changing with a conventional quick-release and you know they kind of got a point of a yes so the system is set to work by use of a cam lever with sort with a rope the axle with a rod on it that then goes into a socket the socket is a separate piece that is screwed into the drop out of the bike so quite an interesting design yeah I’d like to see it in real life and if it’s anything like it is in that video it’d be pretty cool yeah laughs may have a full suspension mixed terrain bike in the pipeline our friends a bike radar have spotted that laughs has filed some patents pertaining to a leaf spring style suspension not just on the fork as we’ve seen in the past but also in the rear triangle of the bike to I think it’s quite a cool design and whilst leaf springs are quite a niche item set in the world of cycling suspension they say have some advantages over standard shocks for a start whilst there is less trouble it has a higher end or rather a faster rebound which sounds kind of counterintuitive to anyone for the mountain biking world but bear with it because gravel riding often free features really when fast vibration sections doesn’t it yeah when I wrote the rift in Iceland there were these sort of corrugated washboard style services and it was brilliant yeah you want to reset to zero as nice as possible for the next ya call a side effect alright in other news Belgian cyclecross start tone Arts has reportedly made the switch from a tube I set up down to a 1 by it comes a lot controller coz the one by two by battle kind of continues to emerge but you would imagine sorry this is off the back of his problems that you had in hammer a read a race of cleaner weeks ago apparently there are many advantages to running on one buy set up an everyday sight across race yeah if you say so Chris I’m not gonna pretend to be any kind of expert but Jeremy Jeremy told yeah that’s right cross on it and finally if you’re after a bog and then head of the gcn shop because tomorrow is Black Friday well it is tomorrow if you’re watching this on Thursday the doulton for Friday it goes up yes we’ve got loads of great offers on because of Black Friday including this new limited edition merch so if you want to look like a swap team officer on your day off like Chris you mean Olli it’s a contrast range and it’s available an introductory offer until December the 4th I’m reliably informed that right now it’s time for snack of the week which is a feature that I’ve never heard of before it’s the best it’s great we’ve been sent this letter and these snacks from dr. Jarvis and his son Jesper who live in Munich in Germany big fans of the tech show and when young Jesper found these super nice biscuits in the local supermarket he had to send them in PS can Ollie do them and say hello in his best German accent this is all his best English reading so I’m looking forward to the German accent well yes but javis these are cakes since supernet ABBA my Liebling snack astonish fats Velda kirschtorte err no you’re definitely get more snacks hopefully next week chi-ching it’s now time for screw riding upgrades by upgrades where you submit evidence of your upgrades that you’ve made to your bikes or equipment for a chance to win the ultimate prize GCN cap ya night before we get into this week’s I just wanted to share this picture of young Ben who is really happy with some purchases he’s made for his bikes and I wanted to share the sort of ecstasy that these purchases have brought him Ben pictured here with some new disc brake pads and if you look at the size of those pads he must be running some hefty rotors on his road bike they’re clearly pads for a four pot caliper so I’m guessing you’ve put some sort of mountain by California Road bike then he looks thrilled he looks really he looks really happy with himself anyway I just want to share that with you all so you can all kind of feel the sort of happiness that a purchase can bring you this yet so as ever submit your entries using the app but don’t worry if the apps not available in your country yet a few of years left know in the comments about that it’s on the way and we’re told by the app squad that it should be ready by January according this all the scores are they I’m calling him that in the meantime if you don’t have the app in your country or region just continue to use the uploader yep it’s done in the description from this okay now two weeks ago we have Hughes gravel bike versus Hannah’s wooden bike Opie and Hank last week they forgot to announce the winner we got so carried away with poly that Chris can you feel it Chris can you believe that one huh oh I’m sorry so the winner was overwhelmingly Hanna’s massive win and sorry for mispronouncing your name as many people pointed out as sorry again for not awarding you the price yeah in in the comment section it’s Hannah’s not Hans anyway this last week last week we had Jeff’s white heart and Galax fixie wallet technically both vixy’s it was another landslide victory wasn’t it going in favor of the gallic with a whopping 88% of that vote last thing Craig was it what onto both of you the caps are on their way it’s gone to this week yes so this week we’re starting out with Simon who says it’s okay to call him Simon thank us he’s from Poland lives in Germany Simon is a mechanical engineer now having been inspired by both GCN channels he decided to make his own bill didn’t have a road bike he decided he wanted to build one he acquired a Kinesis UK alloy frame set very nice yeah and a carbon Forks and beautiful red color he got it for a hundred and thirty euros that’s an argument here brilliant and there was you know a lot of parts missing so he added Shimano 105 group set and he continued sort of an eBay bargain hunt for all the other bits but he’s done incredibly well there I mean he’s assembled all the bits put it together you know from nothing and he also says he managed to keep the price for under a thousand euros nice and under 9 kilograms of weight Fairplay and I think we’ve got to give him bonus points here for putting a Bavarian beverage Radler and his bowl cage that’s nice that yeah refresh it and because we did 3d printed text show stuff in episode 97 and we did our 3d scan he’s decided to show off he couldn’t resist and so he’s made his own 3d scar of his bike for what reason I don’t know but he’s could we always like if you can creative evidence of your upgrades he’s done that here’s a gif of his 3d scan of his bike you see who he’s up against this week ollie yeah come on then Steve and his lights be titanium classic from a New York USA if I could buy a new bike bought a civil or5 frame set the lights be classic they get to that one had that that satin finish and as such it had a rather dull appearance he always envied the light speed owners who had the slightly brushed or polished frames yeah it shows off the titania does this know well you know what I actually I prefer the flat finish myself though other web he contacted Lightspeed and asked if they can brush the frame up to make it look like new they replied and said that they could in fact provide that service for a fee if he paid for the shipping to Chattanooga in Tennessee USA so off the frame web after taking all the components off three weeks later it came back and I love the head badge as well yeah and and as he says you don’t see many head badges like that anymore and they unlike speed Reese took that head badge on I think that looks great yeah the head back just come find me of death as gnarly yeah titanium bikes they do hold a special place yeah nice well never get old will it no I have to say it looks fantastic and I love that he’s put them in annual Tegra on there that’s you know it’s a great group set but I do I do miss his old bar take that old bar tape he had on in the first picture I think our look is amazing and I love how the yellow matches the light speed yellow logo caught party it’s not up to us to decide as a body where they go it’s not up there above your left ear they are bike volt time now you submit pictures of your bike using the app if it’s available in your country at the moment if it hasn’t then it’s grabbing soon hopefully in January and we judge them to be nice or super nice what happens if they’re super nice Chris they’re super nice Ollie they get off yeah now I turn about you Chris but I’m in a good mood this week I think anyone that hasn’t submitted their bike to the bike wall this week is gonna regret that they they didn’t because I’m it I think was gonna be a lot of supervisors whoa well in that case I mean I better give you the power of the Bell it’s alright you can still you can still ring the bell happy anyhow first up we have a Savannah so nervous Shaheed yes a Civello so I love this bike sastras sort of I was nice Astra winning was the first real air at carve a new bike yeah but I believe it’s a loose aluminium wasn’t a soloist as well I think it was aluminium anyway I like those Rolf prima wheels on there with the very low spoke count they just look they look really cool I like the look of those yeah I love that okay deep drop bars yeah that leave a shape very very comfortable I love that he’s got the matching CSC purple authentic and just he’s ticking the boxes isn’t he we’ve got biggie almost smalls cranked in the right position he’s at least sort of lined so you kind of start talking about right I think that’s a super nice it’s a super nice what is is this such a beautiful color isn’t a couple with the Eagles wing there as well right next up dirty rider and he’s got a look on 96 track bike being a lad that’s just ridiculous like that’s another level of bicycle I mean weapons it’s got an S Rome track on there for a start Mavic yeah do they still call them the Comets yeah and the speed you got speed plays as well and the frame that headset the bars is physique hairy early I mean show for this part we can forgive that it’s not in three o’clock position I think because it’s a trap lie so fixie so it becomes a bit more awkward and that is such an incredible it’s the size of that chain ring I think it does it say what size the chain ring is because that looks like it’s probably 60 60 hd3 sweet pie the lights free oh I hope it’s a 19 on the back yeah I hope that I hope that’s because you are an absolute weapon and not just even if you’re not a weapon your bike is a weapon yeah yes a mainland right it’s amazing next up classic what do you make of that group it’s a Genesis isn’t that on it as a Volare yeah very classy actually brain it looks really cool with the those wheels those sidewalls fellow flex time I’ll never forget when those bikes first came out and the team had all the riders ride them cuz yeah Alison Genesis yeah yeah because the the cables were raffle against it thank you but you brought it along of course everyone else had internal cable routing and their cable so if you think think think think think quite unconventional at the time it’s getting the British domestic Racing’s 2012-13 all the other teams were on carbon bikes Madison Genesis kilometers but they look really cool I think they’re beautiful looking frame pictures taken well well lit best-looking crankset of all type of egg pizzas on there as well Alya can beat them yes [Music] next up we have got Haylock 1974 she’s been riding around Rutland with his sturdy cycles nice party you came out Shane Ian bike 3d printed lugs on there very clean oh we I mean we saw some of those that bespoke bike show they are very very nice okay just nice are they they look like those mental ones thats I saw in your robot a couple years ago they were like bonnet like three grams but then they look really clean don’t against that concrete I don’t see with the wireless group set looks really sleek everything she’s very clean it’s just neat ideas I’d like there’s no logos on it yeah I do as I try that it’s like ah and he’s lined up the tires never it got there doing well this week don’t they yes right was your high quality submissions I mean excellent work this week and we’ve got another one here this is from Timmy tapas chef yes well anyway he’s got his first road bike here with a full Shimano are accept our sx group set on there one other one Hana groups that host groups at an old Trek nice nice a classic lines youthful classic bike I like the question after this road yeah is yeah the cut the contrast of the colors against the background looks like a sort of wintry evening scene another photo curious is this something on fire in the background valves lined up only I know you’re a big fan of that yes I mean your chain is a bit dirty but we appreciate that you bought you know like secondhand the chance didn’t ever you still as silver as they are these days it could just be that that’s the color again yes I think that’s an excellent retro looking buying a great first bike yeah and glad to let you have you on board come on then would you reckon nice a super note on one more entry this week I think it could be an us to cut clean sweep of super nice as this week oh yeah this never happened before yes last week hey I mean I’m not on my watch this is incredible scenes I mean we’ve had such amazing submissions what have we got next it’s a party it’s a Nick with his Polly ESX Oh what’s wrong what’s right with it what’s he done I mean it’s just it’s such a nice but I used to have a part of the SX I loved it I sold it in some ways I wish I hadn’t it’s a great buy but why is he photographed it I mean I despair what’s fair lovely on the wrong side what is weird angle there’s just like that what are the what gears in the cranks the wheels are all over the place what’s that big light on the back it’s a light I know I just know are we gonna sleep nice on us a nice a nice it’s a nice if it was me alone I mean it’s you me and had a clean sweep as well anyway you know how to get your bikes on here they don’t you yeah use the app if it’s available in your region and if not you can use the upload of which is in the description below well unfortunately that’s all we’ve got time for this week we hope you’ve enjoyed the show and if you have then please give it a thumbs up and also if you’d like to support the channel and the content we make then you can do by subscribing and 1. 4:11 Your math has to be off.
Call it 3 hours of ride time / 986=329 shifts per hours. Or 5.48 shifts per min. That's one shift every 11 seconds.
I realize you can be dumping a few gears at a time for a hill, but that number of shifts seems excessively high.

  2. I think Eclips make ecliptic chain rings in the 70s.
It is very true, that Shimano has come up with some really bad designs, but they solved bent axles with cassette hub, introduced STI, engineered the drivetrain to shift incredibly smooth. Compart to Simplex. And, increased mechanical reliability greater than Campy Super Record was.

  3. You missed a couple of spectacular fails.

Cannondale joint venture with magic, when they showed up and enter bike it turned out that they hadn't had time to finish it instead of Hollow, it was solid.
Weighed something like 80 or 90 lb

  4. I dont know what it is but everytime i ride an old bike with biopace i feel fast. I may have to do some strava full effort segments with and without biopace to find out if im just full of shit or not haha.

  5. How can a suspension system like the lauf be functioning without ANY sort of damping control?? The idea of compression being suported by leaf springs is kinda cool, but ffs attach a damper to that system so it could explore it's potential!

  6. I think you forgot another Cannondale flop, the magic motorcycle frame that was machine from a solid chunk of aluminum when they showed up an inner bike with it they hadn't gotten around the hollowing it out and it weighed at least a hundred pounds.
Joe Montgomery promise to eat his hat if they didn't have it in production in 3 months.

    Just sayin'

  7. The Shimano Front Freewheel System.
Imo, this was great. You could always shift if the rear wheel was turning. No need to pedal! Unfortunately, a light alloy version was not made. A FLOP as a moneymaker.
