Hi, my name is Bikewrench. I just turned 45 and I've got over 10 years of professional wrenching including a stint of ownership. My main cycling diciplin is gravel but I'm also mostly car free.
That all said I want to share how I couldn't diag something on my own bike that was driving me nuts and wanted to share just because, I dunno…. Liven things up here.
Just over a year ago I was on a 80~ mile gravel ride and my Chris King hub suddenly started freewheeling both ways. Of course I'm out of cell range and have to hike out to get picked up. In short this same scenario happened a total of three times, each time me contacting support, showing pictures, servicing the internals and hoping for the best. This last time I was extremely frustrated and sent the wheel to PDX for analysis. Today I got a email stating that the ring drive was cracked and getting stuck to the drive shell under high load which totally makes sense. I had that ring out for service multiple times and never noticed the crack.
Anyway I just wanted to share because no matter where we are in the food chain it's good to have someone else look things over. My picture with the zip tie not seeing an issue, other picture from CK shows the crack.
"I'm reaching out to let you know that we wrapped up the service on your R45D rear hub. The cause for your engagement issue was a cracked drive ring. See the attached photo. Under heavy load, the split in the drive ring would open up causing the missed engagement. Since it's hardened steel, it's not super noticeable as the ring wants to go back to it's original form. The driveshell got a little damaged due to how it interacts with the drive ring. We've replaced the Ring Drive set, driveshell, and also included our updated slim adjusting clamp with a matching front (new clamps use a T10 torx in place of the 2.5mm hex). We're including your original clamp in case you want to go back to the original design. This repair will all be covered under warranty for you. Couriers have already picked up so it'll head back to Fresno tomorrow. Let me know if you have any questions!"

This is the picture they sent me
CK warranty service really is the best. They replaced a 10 year old rusted out BB for me. Still using the replacement another 10 years later.
Just started rolling on my first set of R45D. Such a nice piece of work. And after 1 ride break in, the steel bearings roll with less resistance than the very spendy ceramic bearings in the hubs I was running prior to
