It would be a pretty good beginner bike with endurance geometry. But bear in mind a few things.
That bike is roughly 19 years old, so may be suffering from a fair bit of wear and tear and if parts such as chain pads and tires need replacing the cost will very quickly add up to more than you originally paid for the bike.. It also may have been involved in crashes over such a long time so you will need to examine the frame closely. And being that it’s so old the frame geometry and the fact it’s run brakes mean you will not be able to fit wider tires. The bike would run no wider than 25mm which is nowadays considered pretty narrow.
But provided it’s in good condition with nothing to replace then it could be a nice starter bike.

I wouldnt call this a great beginner bike. Its really old. Id go for something different and more recent.

In addition to what everyone else says it seems expensive for what it is too. For $425 used you can find something newer, aluminum, probably still rim brake but with a way better more modern groupset. Just yesterday there was a 2015 giant defy with Claris on here for around $300… you could probably get that bike for $2-250 and it would be better than this much older Trek.
