Minimum insertion depth should be printed on the post. At least that, ideally more.

Edit: to clarify, you need to leave as much as the minimum insertion depth currently indicated, as measured from the bottom of the seat post.

Look how long you need and then mark it at top then mesarue how long the minimum insertion is and then go from your mark that you made mark it again and there you could cut.
If I was you I wouldn‘t bother cutting it.

  3. How much do you need to cut, and why? The minimum insertion line means you have to insert the post at least to that line.

  4. Based on your question, I am not sure you should be cutting your seatpost at all.

I personally wouldn’t cut a carbon seatpost, but if you do, you will want to make sure that you have at least the same depth of insertion as the distance between the end of it and the minimum insertion line. So, if you cut off an inch, you should insert it at least an inch past the minimum insertion line.

Make sure you have good dental insurance if you start hacking away at carbon bike components.

  5. The insertion line is the max height you can have sticking up outside the frame.

You want at least 4-5 inches of seat post *inside* the seat tube.

You can shorten the post. If you cut the bottom, you need a new minimum insertion line (4-5 inches from the bottom).

You need to measure from the bottom of the post to the minimum insertion line and leave that much post cut. Essentially, after you’ve cut it, you need the minimum insertion amount still inserted in the bike frame to protect the seat post.

Minimum insertion line will stay the same, just figure out how much to cut while still leaving that amount.

What makes you think it’s too long? That doesn’t look like a particularly long seatpost.

also, cut only what you absolutely must because who knows who you want to ride the bike after you

Measure from the bottom of the post to the minimum insertion line. Write that measurement down. Cut the post. Measure the from the new end of the post and re-mark the minimum insertion line. You have to still have at least the same amount of post inserted in the frame.

also be sure you are at the correct position. You are NOT supposed to be able to touch your feet on the ground when sitting in a saddle. That’s just for kids learning.

  12. cut as little as possible. if you need 1 inch taken off to get to your desired height, take off 1 inch.

Only DIY if you have a proper pipe cutter and know how to cut metal pipe, otherwise take this to a shop.

Whatever you cut off, you have to raise the minimum insertion point by the same amount. Measure it currently from min insert mark to bottom of seat post. It’s probably 4 or 5 inches. No matter what you cut off, you need 4 or 5 inches inserted into the frame of your bike. If you never need to adjust your seat. Place it at the height you want, mark it and measure down the post 4 or 5 inches and that’s the max you can cut.

The minimum insertion line shows you what the minimum is that you need to insert. I’m not sure how to make that clearer.

Cut the least amount needed to fit. So if it’s 5mm too high (you need it 5mm lower), the. Cut 6mm off.

If that’s aluminum, then chamfer and sand the outside bottom edge after making the cut so that you aren’t damaging the inside of the seat tube with burrs. You should also chamfer and sand a carbon fiber seatpost after cutting, but that’s more to prevent peeling damage to the seatpost.

Measure minimum insertion depth. After cutting, insert at least that far.

  18. Measure the minimum insertion depth length. Then, cut off as much as you need, leaving the same insertion depth length after the cut.

  19. I’m highly impressed with this sub… This thread could’ve gone a totally different direction
