Hello good people. I had bought this cheapo bike to use as a at home trainer. I’ve had it for about 3 years. It’s a bottom tier Nishiki.

I know pretty much nothing about bicycles. I did manage to swap the rear wheel when I first got it.

Today I was riding and the chain came off and got wedged between the biggest of the front gears and plastic shield. I can’t tell if anything is broken but there is a significant amount of play when I wiggle the pedal. The whole thing moves, gears and opposing pedal.

There was a ring on the side without the gear that I tightened down with a hammer and a screwdriver but didn’t make any difference.

I’m assuming this is not normal. Is this the bearings in the frame worn out? Or is something loose or out of adjustment?

Any help of tips is greatly appreciated!

Worn bearing?

The piece the wiggly parts go through is called the bottom bracket. It has bearings inside that are worn out, yes. You’ll need to remove the crank, remove the BB, service (or more likely, replace) it and put it all back together.

I just replaced my bottom bracket. It’s about 40$ for the tools and another $10-30 for a new bottom bracket

This looks like a cup and cone bottom bracket. It may just need to be adjusted.
