Hey guys, sad news there but I got my bike stolen yesterday.

It's quite the simple story, my Cannondale TopStone 4 was stored in front of my garage because I started to ride again with the sunny weather and my automatic door didn't shut (or was forced open, I still don't know).

So they took my, and my girlfriend's, bike and ran off without us even noticing. A neightbor rang at our door to prevent us but it was obviously to late (the door must have been opened for a few hours).

Well, anyway, I'm still happy they didn't take anything else (I think they just saw the bike in front and didn't search for more) but I know cops won't probably find it (even if it's engraved) and insurance won't give a penny for it.

So Saturday was my last ride with my first bike that I purchased with all the money I had back in 2021 and this is the last picture I took of it before loosing it forever.

Enjoy each rides my friends <3

  1. My bikes are locked up in the garage.

I also have the garage set to close itself if its been left open for 10 minutes.

Yeah. I bought my first bike and it was a vintage Canadiana in maroon. I was so excited. I cried for days lol. My parents felt so bad they helped buy a new vintage bike.

It’s the absolute worst feeling. It’s violating

  3. My friend had an excellent and expensive touring bike that got lots of notice and compliments. Robbers burgled it out of his basement and left computers and other expensive stuff. He’s sure some punky neighbours who knew he was away, or their friends, took advantage of that. Nowhere is absolutely safe.

Yep. I had a fat cable lock on it in downtown Denver while I visited my GF at her work and had a beer. Went to leave and the lock was on the ground. Went back in and had another beer. Plus a shot.

    No mas cable locks.

So many times. I never buy expensive bikes because I know it’ll get stolen sooner or later

  6. I have a Meross that closes the door automatically at 15 min, and send me notification if it’s been left open for too long. Sometimes the safety sensor on the garage door detects something and will reopen. This gives me peace of mind.

A Nashbar rigid single speed 29er swiped off my porch. Idiot for not locking it! A great bike it was for only $400

That fear, among other reasons, is why I invested in a Brompton. It’s incredible how much more flexibility and control I have now, being able to fold and go nearly anywhere with it. I highly recommend it to any regular commuter. It rides very well, too.

  9. A few as a kid. As an adult, my bikes are only ever one of two places. Either inside of my apartment, or under my ass.

  10. Oh man, I’m so sorry. I know the feeling. Mine was stolen a few years ago when our building had a break in. I keep my bike in my kitchen now and I keep it in my office when I ride to work. Luckily my home insurance covered it, but that violated feeling stuck. I hate having to worry about thieves. I’d bike to a lot more places if it weren’t the case.

Twice. One was locked in a garage- this was in 1978. The other was one of my childhood bikes, locked to the schoolyard bike rack- this was in 1967. Both in upper middle class neighborhoods.

I had my bike stolen when I was 10, it was devastating at the time because my mom couldn’t afford a replacement.
I live on the third floor of an apartment and my bikes on the balcony and I still lock it up at night lol

  13. Had a bike stolen as a kid, my neighbor seen a guy riding my bike right around the corner a couple days later and stole it back 🤣

I also got my bike stolen along with my friends bike while buying some snacks at a 711. We chased the guys down got into a scuffle and got the bikes back.

Another time I was alone, riding at night. A guy on the side of the rode standing by his car decided to push me off my bike but I was able to grab the wheel and pull my bike back to me. I began punching the dude after he tried attacking me as I got up off the floor and he decided to run off.. wild times living in L.A., Lynwood/Compton area.

I have been lucky to get my bikes back and not get hurt during these confrontations.

Our garage door switch near the house door was worn out. The house door slammed shut behind us and the garage door opened. I came down later and my custom built Cervelo was gone. I never got that one back. But I did get a MTB back when I saw it on Ebay and setup a meet to test ride it. Ironically the person selling it was in a wheelchair – wtf

had a hybrid stolen just before easter that was way too nice for what I was using it for (10m city commute)

abus bordo lock didn’t do shit, but all locks can be defeated so it’s not really their fault. got a decathlon house brand chain lock for the replacement bike. if they want to break it then they will, but at least I’m not paying a 100 bucks for it for a 200 eur bike

Ive had 2 bikes stolen as a teenager. One was a diamondback mountain bike wich sucks to loose but it was nothing like looking my prized 1980 GT mach 1. My neighbor gave me the gt as a kid under the condition I get it up and going. I had so much time into restoring it with all new old stock parts and, I had the frame re chromed, all new factory decals, I even found factory branded bar and frame pads from the 80s. I feel your pain. Hoping you find it

Nope. Public transport or stored inside or locked for short periods (max 15 min) where I can see the bike.

Yeah, well my daughter had hers stolen. I had a friend build me a Frankenstein bike with a Gary Fisher Wahoo frame. It ended up being too small for me but was perfect for her. She loved that bike. But you know how kids are not listening to their parents advice. She wouldn’t lock it up, left it outside and it was stolen.

I tried to put up flyers at the local bike shop, but the owner was a dick and acted like his shop was too good for a bulletin board. Never recovered

Well…. She played a stupid game and lost. I told her so.

Have I had a bike stolen? Yes. Sort of. I lent a bike to a “friend” who left it unlocked in a communal basement and since I actually take care of my bikes it looked to be 10x better than anything around it (I’m sure). It didn’t last a week. So I’ve had a bike stolen but it wasn’t because of my carelessness but rather placing trust in the wrong person.

I don’t put “friend” in quotes because they enabled the theft but rather the fallout following it and how they didn’t handle the situation. They went so far as to accuse someone who was moving out that week and while it certainly may have been one of this person’s helpers, the person he suggested has mutual friends with me and isn’t a thief. His accusation was entirely based on speculation too, not on having seen anything.

Most bike thefts are usually opportunity crimes. Whoever stole your bikes is likely local and passes your house regularly.

  20. crackhead cut/filed the steel chain lock off my ebike while I was getting a mchicken

  21. In an ideal world, people wouldn’t steal- but that’s not realistic. I’m sorry you lost a precious valued bike. Unfortunately even bikes in garages get stolen. I’d recommend locking the bike in your garage, or locking it up inside your home.

I had my bike stolen from my patio – and I now store my bike in my apartment. Insurance only covered half because my deductible was high.

    Yeah, kinda ridiculous story…

I was commuting into SF (~25m ride in) and near the end of it I go down this hill that runs along a muni track with the platforms in the middle. I was cruising down and a pedestrian decided to jump off the platform in the middle of the street so I swerved left to give him room to pass. He didn’t notice me at first… When he finally looked up about half way across he startled and backtracked into my path, I swerved right to avoid and he followed… then Again left and I had no where to go but to hit him dead on. This all happened in split seconds, I flipped over my bars and hit the pavement hard.

Picking myself up slowly, making sure cars stopped and I was ok I started to get up to see if he was ok. I turned around to grab my bike and it was gone. Like, gone gone. I was dazed so I walked over to the sidewalk and where another cyclist I passed had stopped and asked him if he sees my bike. Nope, he didn’t see it. We were both baffled. He took off and I proceeded to go about all the things with the accident.

About 10 minutes-ish later the cyclist that went away was walking up with the guy who had stolen my bike with bike in hand. Yes, I got it back but it for sure got stolen. He handed it back to me like he did me a favor and went away. What a way to start your day.

  23. Yeah, Italian thieves stole them of the back of our car midday on a supermarket parking lot. We were gone for 10 minutes and had them locked on but they were clearly professional thieves bc they cut everything away and it was in a port town for ferries

  24. Mine was stolen right in front of my house. It wasn’t an expensive bike but the sentimental value of the bike was priceless.
