Hi everyone, I have been going mad about these gear screws cause I can't figure out how to tighten them properly so they keep coming loose.
I even got the flat tool with the small dents that's made to hold the back of the screw while I tighten it but its just slipping all the time. There are some screws that for some reason decide not to spin around and let me tighten them and some others that no matter what I do keep spinning.
Do you have any tricks? Thanks

They may be ever so slightly too long, that usually gives the symptoms you described.

A small washer if theres room or shorter screw. Itll be like 1 thread less to make a difference

Did you try using some locktite? And set them to the appropriate torque?

If you’re holding the nut with the notched tool and turn the bolt, how can it spin? Or do you mean that you get it fully tight but then if you release the nut, it’s not holding? If that’s the case, you may need shorter chainring nuts. They come in different sizes, perhaps your crankset has the wrong size (or just some of them are the wrong size). E.g. if you take a triple crank and convert it to 1x (putting the chainring in the middle position), there is no longer another chainring on the other side, so the original nuts would be too long. You’d need a set of chainring bolts&nuts intended for a 1x crank.

I would remove all 5 sets of nuts and bolts, bring out a ruler and measure how tall the nuts are. Most likely you will find they are not all the same. Once you find out which ones are the correct height (the ones that were not spinning), bring them to a local bike shop and ask if they have a few spares to give or sell to you.
