I’ve had this Jamis Cross Country 2.0 for some time and it’s been a beater bike for a while. It mainly sees family vacations, basic trails , etc. nothing crazy. I want to freshen it up, put some new stuff on it and bring it back to life. However I have zero experience doing anything bicycle related. I’m mechanically inclined and want to do it myself but where do you start? I’ve watched videos and looked online but unlike cars and trucks it doesn’t seem like there is “part A fits Vehicle A because they are same manufacturer/replacement part”. So how do you know what parts fit your bike and what doesn’t. I.e the stock forks are SR XCT 75mm. How do you go about finding replacements for that? Or upgrades. Budget is 150-250$. Suggestions?

I recently went through the same thing with my bike and giving it a refreshed life. Start by cleaning up the components like the drivetrain. This is the chain, the cassette, the derailleur, etc. in the process check for any abnormalities such as bends. Go from there, you’ll learn more as you go. Youtube videos are great for dealing with stuff like this and serial numbers are stamped on everything if you need to replace anything. Word of warning, you’ll find out just how many tools you don’t have and just how involved this will be lol.
