  1. i think the hoods are cool but with my drops i’m able to grip it fine with the tape. i also like grabbing the bars between the curve as if they were flats to work out different muscle groups in my arm when trying to put down power. i think the hoods would get in the way of that.

  2. Because it looks ugly as f*ck ? Also never had any issues finding a comfy position without those.

    It’s for fragile people

  3. personal issue if you cant keep your hands on the bars without small little hoods

Drop bars without hoods are okay in flat cities but on climbs they’re a real pain , you just don’t have enough leverage to pedal comfortably. I believe most people use them just for the looks. I prefer bullhorns.

  5. I don’t really think people ride fixed gear bikes for their convenience and comfort. You could say the same thing about gears, why does nobody ride with them? Taking away all the key benefits of matching your cadence to your speed!

I don’t think they look good. And I’m better in the drops anyway.

  7. My crit bike has compact road drops with no hoods because I ride in the drops.

That’s why many turn up the drops quite a bit . Trying to climb with level drops is a pain in the ass. However, I climb in the drop position and it’s a bit better when at proper level angle

  9. I have several reasons:
    * Bike fit was more comfortable for me with compact drops. I don’t race track, nor am I a messenger so I like to be comfy on my bike and don’t need super deep drops.
    * The faux hoods give me my most comfortable everyday riding position while preserving the many different hand positions available with drop bars. Hoods for general riding around and climbing power, drops for sprinting, and tops for being as upright as possible to stretch the neck out and look around when needed. I had nitto noodles without dummy hoods before my compact bars and while I was able to use the ramps to simulate the hoods position, without having something with a positive rise in front of my hands, I always felt a bit precarious, like I could slip forward off the bars with braking force or a pot hole or something. The fake hoods eliminate that.
    * The sphinx position is the one of the most aerodynamic positions you can get on a bike without TT/aero bars, and the dummy hoods help make that position more comfortable and more safe. There’s a reason more track bar manufacturers are incorporating fake hood nubs into their bars. I don’t race so it’s all about being able to get aero when riding into the wind.
    * Everyone’s got their opinions but I actually think mine look pretty cool and I actually only really care about my own opinion of how my bike looks and not what nerds on Reddit think (I love you guys tho!)

  10. IMO it’s a rebellious/aesthetic thing to either not have or go completely out of the way to make some sort of hood mount only to have a brake lever mounted on the tops, why not just use hoods with a brake lever already part of the hoods. The fixed gear crowd wants nothing to do with roadies. I love riding fixed gear but fortunately for me I don’t have any of the lame ass parameters that the “fixie” world lives by. I get it it’s freedom of expression and budget constraints (put some ape hangers on the mother fucker) , but some of the stuff I see should be in BCJ just saying.
    Ape hangers with dummy hoods
    Fuck ya!!
