Just recently acquired a bike so I need some help. It’s stuck on 7 and I can’t get in gears 1-6. I want to check underneath but I can’t seem to get the shifter open. Please help! This is a Mongoose excursion mountain bike.
I think you accidentally wrote Stuck instead of Suck.

Hard to tell exactly. Quite often these cheap revo shifters are very hard to disassemble and repair. Worst case an entire new shifter with a cable pre installed will only be $10-20

The best way to service a grip shift system is to dismount them carefully from the handlebar, put them in a ziploc bag and install an escapement style shifter or friction if you are into nostalgia.

Buy a new one. They aren’t very expensive. I’d go with a SRAM one.
And don’t bother with the naysayers. GripShifters are fine.
Many of the GripShift Karens also like to dis “dork disks”.

You gotta pull real hard. If you get a space opened up put something in there to keep it separated. And don’t lose the small piece of metal that will inevitably pop out.

Just gonna throw this out there, not trying to offend…but…
Are you pedaling while you try to shift? I mean, is the back wheel off the ground, as on a rack or while upside down, and you’re operating the pedal while attempting to shift?
If that’s all sorted and it doesn’t work then the cable probably slipped and got stuck inside where it shouldn’t be.
They’re cheap enough to just replace it if you can’t just reassemble it.
That’s what I did. Microshift’s off Amazon where a few bucks each.
