My friend, it’s time for a new rear wheel. Correct tire pressure and system weight are key to prevent this from happening. I use the Silca tire pressure calculator. Additionally make sure you do not exceed the overall system weight.

If this dent is only on one side this means your well got hit by something. With low tire pressure this could have been a bike next to you at a bike rack, a curb hit an angle etc.

You might able able to remove the tire and bent the dent back to straighten the rim, it should be fixable to some extent – when you’re done remember to sand the surface gently to even it out.

As for prevention, once you figure out what caused it then you can think of preventing it.

  3. There are dents and there are dents. This one is really bad.
Time for a new wheel (set)

  4. Yes & correct tyre pressure will help but if you hit something hard enough even with correct pressure its going to go.

Rim is toast time for a new one

Some dents can be corrected, this one looks fatal. Time for a new rim or wheel, especially since you’re running rim brakes here!

Yes: in general, this kind of damage can be avoided by running sufficient tire pressure to keep the rim from taking the impact of hard-edged obstacles (curbs, potholes, railroad tracks) directly.

For the tires shown in your photo, I’d probably recommend 60psi for a 170lbs person. More if the rider is heavier, not less than 50psi even for a very light rider since a person of any size can still deform the tire if the obstacle is hard-edged enough (a very square curb at speed).

I don’t see disc brakes on that, I’d think the rear brakes would be thumping badly. I’d actually ride that if it had disc brakes and not tubeless, but I suspect I’ll be declared irresponsible as usual. I would not try to straighten that. With rim brakes you’ll get tired of the thumping sooner or later and replace.

Stuff gets broken sometimes. Even car wheels get bent by potholes. Try to avoid, not always possible.
