I bought last year a brand new Surly Straggler frame and had it built up by my local bike shop. I took the stem off this evening for the first time to swop the stem for a different one, and I found this strange mark at the top of the steerer tube. The photograph makes it look worse than it is. There is essentially an area on the steerer tube (which is steel) where the surface coating seems to have worn away. The surface is now a little rough, but there is no real wearing-away and whatever damage has been caused is superficial. The weird thing is that the area of wear is under the stem, which was carefully torqued into position, no there would be no movement there. What could be causing this? And is this likely to be safe to ride? Any views appreciated.

Probably from the pipe cutting tool they used to cut the fork down… they look like tool marks. It’s only cosmetic though.

  3. The pipe cutting tool most places use has wheels that help keep it a perfect cut. This looks like the marks on copper pipe i cut at work and school almost to a T. Definitely fine to keep riding on.
