I will soon be extending my commute from 7 miles round-trip, to 22 miles round-trip. I was using a dedicated commuter bike, but will be switching to my road bike.

I know, I know, a pannier and bag, or a basket would be ideal. However, at the present moment, I have no desire to put either of those things on a Trek Emonda. I do plan on buying a more suitable commuter bike and adding a rack, but currently in the saving phase for that.

In the meantime, instead of carrying a full-on backpack, I was wondering if a Kadet sling from Chrome Industries would be sufficient for the ride. I really only need to carry a computer, a lunch, and a change of clothes here or there (but I also have a frame bag I can fit clothes in).

A sling bag like that isn’t terribly comfortable for longer rides.

I’d suggest a backpack for commuters. I use the Osprey Radial and Osprey Metron, and I do 40 miles round trip. There are other brands of backpacks that are specifically made for riding that do good jobs as well.

    Personally, I don’t like panniers.
