I recently got a cannondale trail 5 2017 used and was wondering if it would be worth upgrading components such as wheels, fork, drivetrain, etc… for more rough off-roading. thanks in advance.
If you can afford it,of course. I ride a 1997 rocky mountain, that been upgraded a hundred times.
I ride a 1995 merlin that’s been upgraded a hundred times. I have a new trek, that, probably will be upgraded in the future.

if you restrict yourself to parts which can be easily transferred to another build, yes. Price it out, be conservative, bill yourself for your time – if it comes close to half of what you’d spend on another bike more tuned to your desired application, save your money and time for that different bike.

I have this bike and I added a dropper and race face pedals. Also went with wider front tire. I tried to update the fork and my lbs said to save and upgrade to something that fit my riding style. Stayed on my cannondale for another 2 years while saving – now I ride both

I would say go for it, I had an old scott hardtail I got for 150 bucks and I then upgraded it well over the price I paid with a one by drivetrain and brakes and wheels and an air fork, I enjoy it so much more and in my own opinion riding wise it’s worth more than the total price of the upgrades.

With some brands and model lines it does. With some others it doesn’t.
This Cannondale, personally, I would not upgrade it but buy a completely new or better used bike.
On the other hand every upgrade project can enhance your mechanics skills.
