Got a new sprocket today, first time changing one. What are these rings? Do I only need one of them? they seem like adapters?

i believe they slot into the middle to account for different spindle sizes on your crankset, if it is too big when you slide it onto the spindle it will need the ring in there so it doesn’t wiggle around
