Hey I currently have a 42-32-22T crankset and a Shimano Deore 11-42 cassette with a RD-M786 10 speed rear derailleur on my 90s orange P7 mountain bike. I replaced the old 7 speed cassette and rear derailleur with these because I wanted lower ratios for bikepacking and the 7 speed cassette on it before was broken, but now I can only use 2 of the chainrings! (32 and 22T) because of the rear cassette. My crank just broke this weekend and so now I need to decide what to replace it with. whats the best direction to take this?

Option 1:

Replace with a single speed at the front. My mate has a crank he offered to replace it with for me with single speed I just need to get a low enough chainring eg. 28T. This is the cheapest option ~£20 but it would only give me a gear inches range of 17 inches to 65 inches. meaning it will be tough uphill and slow on the flats and spinning out a lot.

Price- ~£20

Option 2:

Buy a 22T-36T crank like this one-

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/306256051604?_skw=crankset+hollowtech&itmmeta=01JSXV2GE9NYKMVQR1EV4166RZ&hash=item474e487d94:g:mz0AAOSw6A9mkiw0&itmprp=enc%3AAQAKAAAA0FkggFvd1GGDu0w3yXCmi1dFhHRIXIe3Vzr3YOCnKiXEIS%2BCmdQOOduF0Chw%2FsrD%2By3SYczd5QXzZ%2FfDk2kTJQjk8H5ipUkZ0zO3kYq%2BVPtHdLUZFNbUIZqkK381%2B5VbkiDBtT5Br7RqoVnLZkklRsk0cropfupLPaWxs6snzWufJFdUevAFJtuw2ktRDyTnX%2FkAFT4uihO3cBJYB%2BTTgGzCFbeaGbNpmTez3h9yDM%2FqMlSx1IFFe%2FzurQQTlHmJaMkCdngXFwTMaRavzGkUhNg%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR6iHirvPZQ

This would give me a range of 13 inches to 84 inches which is pretty good. but does it work with a 10 speed cassette? I think it might be a bit stretched and ill have to avoid changing into certain gears in the 22T chainring and may need to change cassette if it doesnt work. Also, not 100% certain it will work with my 3 speed front derrailleur aswell.

Price- anywhere between £35 and £120

Option 3:

Replace with a pretty much like for like 3x (42-32-22T or 40-30-22T) crankset and then change the rear cassette to a 32-11T cassete and 8 speed shifter I have lying around. This would mean buying a new rear derrailleur though. It would give me a gear inches range of 18 inches to 98 inches which would be a little tough on the climbs but plenty quick on the flats.

Price- ~£100 for crankset and rear derraileur

What do you think is the best option? baring in mind I'll be using the bike for a lot of climbing with a fully loaded bike on many different terrains, dirt, gravel, road etc. Thanks for your help!

  1. If a wide range is most important to you then stick with 3x, and replace the 10sp cassette with something like an 11-36 so that you can use all of the gears.
