Quick update on the Trek 750 project!
I’ve made a few changes so far:
-
Replaced the original one-piece Matrix quill stem with an Origin8 quill adapter paired with a short threadless stem, so I can run contemporary handlebars.
-
Picked up Salsa Bend Bar Deluxe handlebars (currently uncut) and installed ergonomic grips — although I’ve noticed the grips make hand placement awkward with the grip shift and brake levers due to their length, so that may get tweaked.
-
The new threadless stem is much shorter than the original Matrix quill stem. I might swap it again since the riding position feels a little too low and aggressive for the relaxed commuter setup I’m aiming for.
(Note: since the new setup doesn’t have an integrated cable stop, the front cantilever brake cable no longer travels vertically through the stem like it originally did. I’ll need to figure out a cleaner solution for that.)
Other changes:
-
Replaced the saddle with a black Brooks B17 (Brompton edition).
-
Installed Bontrager NCS fenders.
Took it out for a short test ride — overall happy so far but definitely still dialing in fit and comfort.
Would love to hear any feedback, suggestions, or lessons learned from anyone who’s set up a 750 for commuting or touring! Always open to ideas.
More updates to come!

B17s are usually set closer to level to avoid sliding forward and putting more pressure on the wrists but hey, if it’s working for you all good.
I’ve got a B17 narrow on my commuter and it works a little better for me than a standard B17 when running slightly lower bars.
If I had to offer an aesthetic perspective, I think a quill stem might suit the look of your build better. A nice choice might be the VO removable faceplate quill stem since it has a 31.8mm clamp diameter; you’d be able to run your new bars with it. They make em in 80-110mm lengths and have plenty of rise.
