So I noticed my shimano sora front derailleur being fractured like this. The weirdest thing is that my friend has had the exact same thing happen to a sora derailleur, on the exact same bike model that I have – coincidence or an issue with how the bike has been set up? Any guesses on what could cause this? I don't remember ever bumping my bike in a way that could have broken metal like that.

Most likely worn out, or from trying to shift while not pedaling or not pedaling fast enough.
Unfortunately, I think that was just a bad batch of derailleurs. It’s telling that your friend had the same thing happen. Not your or your friend’s fault, I’d say.
