My first was a 48:13 but it was UNUSABLE for hills and terrible for getting around as a daily rider so i switched to 48:18, it was on the far end of the spectrum and i found it really tiring to go anything further than 30KM it also had much trouble picking up speed on flat roads. Missed the speed on my first ratio so i switched out everything for a 49:15. Almost perfect, fast and smooth but the only problem is stopping. Got into a few minor accidents just because i couldn’t stop in time, not to mention skidding is IMPOSSIBLE (could just be a skill issue lol). Js wanted to know any recommendations for something fast but also could be used for a daily rider like riding to school or getting something from the shop.

  1. 49/17 is all I’ll ever ride… perfect for every type of terrain plus.. 17 skid patches.. excellent if ur an ambidextrous skidder like myself leaving lines of smoking rubber on the pavement

  2. I like riding a 49/16 bc it keeps me from spinning out and not too large to get going from a stop.

Buuuut a weird ratio that is also smaller than a 49:16 but bigger than a 49:17 is a 52:18… I know it sounds weird but it’s an oddly perfect in between.

Id say 47xx17 is very nice, especially if you go breakless. Not being able to stop is being a hazard not just for yourself, but everyone one the road. You should know your limits, if you want to go fast on flats and climb hills at the same time fixed gear is not your thing:(

Get some foot retention and learn to ride fixed before worrying about tweaking ratios to go faster.

Pick a 3+ Gear ratio 50 x 15 ride flats. Lots of em. just train 50 x 15 for a month. then at the end of the month switch to a 2.7-2.5. youll be able to manipulate that gear and will be considerably stronger.

Keep that ratio light. Save your knees and get better cadence. You’ll be a faster rider.

  7. If you are getting into minor accidents its only a matter of time before you are in a major one. Spend the time to learn the skills to get yourself out of emergency situation and ride accordingly so you dont end up in them to start with. It has nothing to do with gear ratio and everything to do with skillset and mind set. If you want to go fast just put a front brake on the bike.

If you are having a hard time skidding it is most likely your ratio being too hard. I also struggled when I started, then I changed to a lower ratio and all of a sudden I could do it. It also helps give you a confidence boost!

    For the street? 49×18

I rode 56×17 in my last triathlon. I’m planning on 59×17 for my next

I’m partial to my current set-up, 46/15. It allows me to start smoothly and quickly from a track stand. I can also gain speed easily without coming too far out of the saddle. (*<–Courtesy of foot retention, by the way. Get some!*) The speed is moderate, I’d say. I’ve never tracked my speed but it’s fast enough for me. The ratio works well on light to moderate grades too. Well enough for me anyways. I try to avoid hills if possible.
