The Gateshead Millennium Bridge is a pedestrian and cyclist tilt bridge spanning the River Tyne between Gateshead arts quarter on the south bank and Newcastle upon Tyne’s Quayside area on the north bank.

This unique crossing for pedestrians and cyclists was the world’s first tilting bridge. The Gateshead Millennium Bridge has become a landmark for Gateshead and the Tyne, a river famous for its historic bridges.

Designed by WilkinsonEyre and engineered by Gifford, the bridge features two graceful arches that tilt to allow maritime traffic to pass, earning it nicknames like “The Blinking Eye Bridge” and “The Winking Eye Bridge.” Opened to the public in 2001 and officially inaugurated by Queen Elizabeth II in 2002, it stands as a symbol of modern design and functionality.
